“We are really pleased that Jonathon has committed to the club for a further two years,” Lloyd said.

“He’s an integral member of the playing group and very much a part of the club’s future.”

Injury troubles over: Hill

0

Two games back from an ankle injury that kept him out of the side for two games, Stephen Hill says he’s feeling fine and is confident he’s over the issue.

The exciting midfielder first hurt the ankle in the round 11 win over Richmond, when he played through the pain to help Freo register an important win.

He missed the next two games but has returned for Freo’s past two wins over the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne.

“It’s feeling good,” he said.

“The ankle has been pulling up well from both the games and I’m really confident with it now.”

Hill said his trademark pace hadn’t been affected either.

“It doesn’t worry me at all, I feel confident in changing directions,” he said.

The 21-year-old has improved in contested ball this season, which he said had helped him break away from the tags he gets on a weekly basis.

Ballantyne excited to play with Walters

0

Hayden Ballantyne is excited at the prospect of a forward line partnership with Michael Walters for the rest of the season.

Walters kicked three goals and set up numerous others in a brilliant return against Melbourne last weekend following his banishment to Swan Districts in January.

While Ballantyne is also keen to spend time in the midfield, he looked forward to playing with Walters when in attack.

“Hopefully we will be a really strong duo once we get a bit of chemistry working together, which just happens naturally,” Ballantyne said.

“Small forwards, we know what we are going to do most of the time, so it’s good.

“We work really well down there together.”

Ballantyne said Walters’ performance in his comeback game was an inspiration to the entire team.

Second knee reconstruction for Morabito

0

Fremantle midfielder Anthony Morabito is to undergo a second reconstruction on his injured left knee.

The 20-year-old, who was on the comeback trail after playing for Peel in the WAFL, had similar surgery on his left knee in December 2010 after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament.

He injured the same knee at training last Friday and flew to Melbourne earlier this week to consult a specialist.

General manager of football operations Chris Bond said that after visiting the specialist today the medical advice was that Morabito undergo a second knee reconstruction after damaging his ACL.

“It is bitterly disappointing for Anthony, his family, the club and our members and supporters,” Bond said.

“However, we see Anthony as having a long-term future with the club and remain confident that, with the appropriate recovery and rehabilitation program, he will return to senior football next year.”

Bond said that Morabito was due to undergo surgery tomorrow.

AFL, Freo honour the women of the game

0

This weekend’s round of fixtures celebrates AFL Women’s Round, acknowledging the valuable contribution of women to Australia’s Game. It also focuses on recognising and developing female leadership across all levels of the Australian football industry, from community to the elite.

Fremantle will honour the ladies of the game at this Sunday’s game against Greater Western Sydney when members of the club’s female supporter group, the Sirens, will form a guard of honour to welcome the players out onto Patersons Stadium.

A range of activities will take place across the AFL during the week, headlined by the AFL Women’s Industry Luncheon on Friday July 20 and culminating in several match day events across the weekend.

A key element of this year’s luncheon will be the inaugural Jill Lindsay Oration.

The Oration will be held each year in memory of Jill Lindsay, the longest-serving employee in the history of the VFL / AFL and the only woman in the competition’s history to be honoured with Life Membership.

“It’s been coming” says Mundy

0

David Mundy says his best-on-ground effort against Melbourne on Saturday was the culmination of weeks of hard work and persistence in what has been a difficult season to date for the Freo midfielder.

Mundy had 27 disposals and six tackles and was hugely influential at the stoppages and around the ground.

The 26-year-old said he’d been working diligently with the midfield coaches and felt his form had been improving by the week.

“It’s good to get a kick after so many months of not, but I always felt it’s been coming,” Mundy said.

“It might not have come out in the results, but I’ve been working hard with our midfield coaches at training and I always felt I was heading in the right direction.”

Despite his high statistics in Saturday’s game, Mundy said it wasn’t possessions that he judged his game on, but rather his impact on the team’s new midfield structures under Ross Lyon.

WAFL Watch – Defenders

0

Peter Faulks (PT) 22 disposals (9 kicks, 13 handballs) 5 marks, 4 tackles
Peter played key back in a team that was under a fair amount of pressure at different times. The big thing for Peter’s game is that he is positioning really well. He will release his opponent into congestion and run some really good defensive angles, which resulted in a lot of East Perth turn overs. Another angle to Pete’s game that he has been working on is his drive and attack. He did this on the day and gave a lot of run to receive when Peel won possession.

Lee Spurr (PT) 21 disposals (16 kicks, 5 handballs) 10 tackles, 1 goal
Lee played in defence for the first, second and fourth quarters and up forward in the third. He demonstrated leadership in trying to settle things down when Peel were being bombarded with entry upon entry. He also took some strong contested marks, demonstrating courage, and his spoiling and on-field direction was very good. Lee ran really hard all day and there were some strong tackling efforts.

WAFL Watch – Midfielders

0

Fremantle assistant and senior development coach Simon Lloyd says the club is keen to see Jesse Crichton demand the ball more in the WAFL.

Crichton was the WAFL Player of the Round for his solid effort in Peel Thunder’s loss to East Perth.

“The big thing for Jesse is that he demands the football and gets used a lot more,” Lloyd said.

“He has shown over the last couple of weeks that he is playing with a lot of energy and drive, and before too long, he will force himself back into senior contention.”

Lloyd said the club was pleased that Peel was giving the Tasmanian time in the midfield.

“Peel has been great in playing Jesse as an inside-mid,” he said.

“They are giving him plenty of opportunities and he is showing a real appetite to work hard on the training track at the moment.

“His running numbers have been very good and that’s transferring into his game.”
