Form wasn’t good enough: Duffield

0

Paul Duffield admits that it was his form that saw him dropped from the team earlier this season.

The skilful half-back was omitted for round 11 and missed three games while he went back to the WAFL to find touch with South Fremantle.

Duffield said an honest conversation with senior coach Ross Lyon identified where he needed to improve.

“Ross is really good at holding all the players to account and making sure we’re consistently giving great effort,” he said.

“He felt I wasn’t doing that, which was understandable. There were a few things I had to work on.”

Duffield was tasked with re-focussing on doing the basics and doing them 100 per cent of the time.

“AFL players have expectations of what they must deliver on game day, and my effort wasn’t good enough,” he said.

Fyfe ‘will make big impact’

0

Fremantle ruckman Jon Griffin is confident young star Nat Fyfe can hit the ground running in his return from a shoulder reconstruction and boost the team’s engine room against Port Adelaide on Sunday.

Fyfe has been declared a certain starter by coach Ross Lyon as Fremantle looks to notch its fourth straight win – and its fifth in succession against the Power – at AAMI Stadium.

The 20-year-old hasn’t played since round five, but his rehabilitation from a second shoulder reconstruction has been faultless and Lyon confirmed he would return along with sharpshooter Chris Mayne.

“He (Fyfe) was right to go last week in his mind, but we wanted to give him more work and make sure he really ticked all the boxes thoroughly,” Lyon told radio 6PR. “He’ll play, that’s how close he is.”

Fyfe led Fremantle for disposals and contested possessions last season and he was the team’s most effective midfielder in the opening two games this year before injuring his shoulder in round three.

Never about percentage: Johnson

0

Michael Johnson says Greater Western Sydney were too talented for Freo to ever consider playing for percentage.

The defender, who is having one of the best seasons of his career, said the only points Freo spoke about during the week were the four points for winning the match against the young Giants.

“We didn’t focus on the score or percentage at all,” he said.

“If we put our guard down, GWS was talented enough to kick a few goals or even get close to winning.”

Johnson said Freo’s only aim was to replicate on the field the way the players had trained all week.

“It doesn’t matter who we play, we go out there and play the way we want to play,” he said.

“If we get the four points, it’s a bonus. We played the way we’ve been training and we got the four points.”0

Freo boy Griffin happy to stay

0

Fremantle ruckman Jon Griffin says a contract extension at the club he’s loved all his life was a “dream come true”.

Speaking after the 95-point win over Greater Western Sydney, a content Griffin said he was “very happy and rapt” to sign on for two more years.

“I’ve enjoyed my time since I’ve been here,” he said

“As a kid, I followed Fremantle and I barracked for East Fremantle as well.

“I’m a Fremantle boy and it’s a dream come true for me to play for the footy club.”

Griffin has been excellent leading the ruck since Aaron Sandilands went down injured in round 11.

He had a bit of help on Sunday with Kepler Bradley and Zac Clarke filling in at the stoppages, allowing him to spend some time in attack.

“All three of us had a bit of a taste at the ruck and up forward as well,” he said.

Team effort gets Walters his goals

0

Another game, another highlight or two for Michael Walters to add to his resume, but the exciting forward doesn’t want to take the credit for his moments of magic.

Walters kicked two brilliant goals against Greater Western Sydney on Sunday to back up last week’s excellent three-goal performance against Melbourne at Etihad Stadium.

“They were good goals, but I’m not going to take the credit for it,” a humble Walters said.

“It was a team effort.”

‘Son Son’ said it was his captain Matthew Pavlich who helped him kick his second goal.

“He blocked me out so as soon as I heard him call me back, I knew I was in the clear, so I had time to compose,” he said.

Walters admitted Freo’s errant kicking for goal was disappointing, especially the second term which saw the home side register 2.13.

Nat Fyfe will play: Lyon

0

Ross Lyon has confirmed the news Freo fans have been waiting for: Nat Fyfe is back.

Lyon told 6PR the young gun would take his place in the team against Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Sunday.

Fyfe has been out of action since having a shoulder operation back in May.

Lyon said form forward Chris Mayne would also return to the side after missing the GWS game with a calf injury.

Defender Zac Dawson (knee) will be tested this week, as will Greg Broughton (back).

Lyon said Nick Lower, who sustained a concussion recently and missed Freo’s past two games, came off the ground with nausea in the WAFL for Perth on Saturday.

But the senior coach said Freo was not yet sure if it was related to the concussion or because of illness.

Among others in selection contention were Lachie Neale, who had 35 touches for Swan Districts, in-form Peel defender Peter Faulks and Alex Silvagni.

No win situation: Lyon

0

Fremantle coach Ross Lyon says his team was in a “no win” situation against Greater Western Sydney on Sunday, with the 95-point margin still seen as sub-par by critics.

The Giants’ average losing margin in the month leading up to Sunday’s game was 113 points, and Fremantle appeared to be coasting towards just its second ever triple-figure win when it burst out of the blocks in the first quarter.

Inaccuracy in the second term proved costly, however, with the home team booting 2.13 before eventually winning 18.24 (132) to 5.7 (37), lifting its percentage from 97.6 to 105.06.

Brownlow medallist Gerard Healy said Fremantle needed to win by at least 100 points to record a “true victory”, but Lyon said his team would take the win and move on ahead of a trip to AAMI Stadium to face Port Adelaide next Sunday.

“You’re on a ‘no win’ here today, so you tick it and move on,” the coach said on Sunday night.

Fast start Freo

0

Fremantle will target a fast start against Greater Western Sydney on Sunday, but coach Ross Lyon insists his team will not be playing for a percentage boost against the last-placed Giants at Patersons Stadium.

Slow starts have held Fremantle back in the last month with the team trailing at half time in three of its last four clashes, including against the 16th-placed Melbourne at Etihad Stadium last Saturday.

Against the Western Bulldogs in round 15, Fremantle took a three-point lead into the main break but had kicked just four goals in an uninspiring half of football.

Lyon said Fremantle needed to improve the way it started matches and the opening quarter would be a focus against the Giants, who are travelling to Perth for the first time.

“We’ve tried to start training intensely and different warm-ups and all those sorts of things, [but] I think it’s just executing the basics really well that we haven’t done in first quarters,” the coach said on Friday.

Freo Line-up: Suban and Clarke return

0

Nick Suban and Zac Clarke have been selected to replace the injured Chris Mayne and Greg Broughton for Sunday’s clash against Greater Western Sydney at Patersons Stadium.

Suban’s run and hardness will test the young Giants, who have lost consecutive games by 161 and 119 points, while Clarke’s height will stretch Kevin Sheedy’s defenders.

Freo will go into the game with talls Jon Griffin, Kepler Bradley and Clarke. While Griffin will ruck, it remained to be seen how the other two will be used between the ruck and up forward.

Suban has played seven matches this season and will be keen to impress after being in and out of the side in 2012.

Clarke could replace Mayne in attack to keep Freo’s forward structure intact.

“Zac’s been a part of that contingent all year,” senior coach Ross Lyon said.
