WAFL Watch – Rucks and Forwards

0

Fremantle assistant and senior development coach Simon Lloyd describes Josh Mellington’s 11-game stint on the sidelines as “nothing but professional”.

The young midfielder sustained a long-term hamstring injury after he had made a promising start to the season at AFL level.

“Josh has really set a very high standard,” Lloyd said.

“He has had a taste of playing AFL football, and that’s what he is here to do.

“We have been very impressed, but he knows that there is a lot of hard work in front of him.

“Josh has shown us through his attitude that he is prepared to do that hard work.”

Lloyd shared his notes on Freo’s other rucks and forwards in the WAFL

Pavlich reaches 300 official games

Fremantle’s greatest player, Matthew Pavlich, qualifies for AFL Life Membership this Saturday when he runs out for his 300th official game against Melbourne at Etihad Stadium.

Ironically, he made his AFL debut against the Demons in round 5, 2000, after being drafted from South Australian club Woodville-West Torrens.

Pavlich has played 270 premiership games, 25 pre-season games, one state of origin game and three International rules matches.

The Freo legend has won a peerless six Doig Medals and is enjoying a brilliant run of form up forward this season.

He becomes the first person in the club’s history to reach AFL Life Membership with his on-field service completed entirely with Fremantle.

Pavlich said it was a big thrill to qualify for AFL Life Membership.

Bradley relishes opportunity

0

Fremantle forward Kepler Bradley was given a clear-cut job to perform against the Western Bulldogs on Sunday: keep defender Brian Lake out of match-winner Matthew Pavlich’s way.

Lake leads the AFL in marks this season, averaging more than eight a game, and his ability to peel off his opponent and take intercept marks or spoil a contest was seen as a hurdle for Fremantle at Patersons Stadium.

Bradley, who returned to play his first game since round three, made a dubious start as Lake racked up eight disposals and took five marks in the first quarter.

However, the Fremantle big man recovered to play a crucial decoy role as Pavlich kicked six goals and Lake finished with nine more touches and four more marks for the game.

“My job was pretty much to try and get Lake out of Pavlich’s space,” Bradley said.

“He gets two and three defenders against him every week and wherever I can help the champion out I will.

Pav needs support: Lyon

0

Fremantle coach Ross Lyon has challenged his team to find match-winners beyond captain Matthew Pavlich after the champion forward delivered a vintage six-goal performance against the Western Bulldogs on Sunday.

Pavlich has kicked 20 goals in his past four games and he was the driving force in Fremantle’s 38-point win at Patersons Stadium, keeping his team’s finals chances alive.

Lyon described Pavlich’s influence as critical as the 7-7 team moved level on points with eighth-placed St Kilda ahead of three straight matches against bottom-four opposition.

However, the coach stressed that Fremantle needed to “move beyond” Pavlich and have “more bona fide players” consistently delivering at AFL level.

“We’ve got a lot of 40- or 50-game players and 20-game players that have to start playing with a hard, consistent edge and attitude and a hard discipline to what we want,” Lyon said on Sunday night.

“When we get what we want and they play with a hard edge, we’re a pretty good team.

Lyon excited by youth

0

Fremantle coach Ross Lyon says his first-year players have “commanded opportunities” this season as Cameron Sutcliffe prepares to make his debut against the Western Bulldogs at Patersons Stadium on Sunday.

Sutcliffe, who was recruited with pick No.71 in the 2011 NAB AFL Draft, will be the fourth first-year player to debut this season for Fremantle, joining Hayden Crozier, Lachie Neale and Lee Spurr.

Lyon, who confirmed on Friday that Sutcliffe would play along with inclusions Kepler Bradley and Antoni Grover, said it had been a productive draft crop for the club.

“They’ve commanded opportunities and they’re really hard workers,” the coach said.

“We’d like to think we can combine that back with (Stephen) Hill, (Nat) Fyfe and (Anthony) Morabito, and Jayden Pitt is a long-term project. We certainly think the future is bright.

“There’s some change and some real exciting young talent to come into the team, which we’re pleased about.”

2012 Bravery Awards

0

Eleven special children and young adults were today honoured for their courage at the annual Bravery Awards ceremony at Fremantle headquarters.

Now in its 18th year, the Bravery Awards ceremony is acknowledges of the amazing strength, determination and courage of the special young people and their families who, for one reason or another, pass through the wards of hospitals within the South Metropolitan Area Health Service (SMAHS).

Fremantle first-year players Lee Spurr, Lachie Neale, Tom Sheridan, Cam Sutcliffe, Sam Menegola, Jordan Wilson-King Alex Forster and Haiden Schloithe shared stories of bravery from the 11 award recipients.

One of those stories, detailed by Spurr, was of Carl-Akira Fujinami. Carl, 17, was enjoying a holiday in Perth when he injured his spine while playing in the surf at Cottesloe Beach on 2 January.

Carl is now a tetraplegic, which means that he cannot move his legs and has limited function in his arms.

One lucky award recipient was also given the opportunity to be the Docker 4 a Day at the round 17 game against Greater Western Sydney at Patersons Stadium.

WAFL Watch – Midfielders – Sutcliffe soars

0

Among his 34 possessions for East Fremantle last weekend, WAFL Player of the Round Cam Sutcliffe gave a glimpse of his ability with a brilliant goal from outside 50 on his opposite left foot from a standing start.

Freo assistant and senior development coach Simon Lloyd said Sutcliffe’s goal was one highlight in an impressive game from the 20-year-old South Australian.

“It interesting because I asked him about that goal and he said he hadn’t had a go at kicking on his non-preferred for a while,” Lloyd said.

Lloyd said Sutcliffe’s versatility and preparedness to do the team thing were features of his game.

“It’s really good to have a player that can play on the wing who is very team orientated,” he said.

“Cam thinks a lot about where he needs to run defensively so he can help the team out, but the big thing about his game on the weekend was how hard he worked forward to get dangerous.

WAFL Watch – Forwards

Kepler Bradley (WP) – 21 disposals (13 kicks, 8 handballs), 10 marks, 1 goal
Kepler played key forward and ruck and he ran really well. The good thing about his running was his multiple leading, which was rewarded with 10 marks. The majority of those came when he was playing as a key forward, leading hard at the ball. His ball handling was good below his knees and he made himself difficult to defend because of his work-rate.

Michael Walters (SD) – 17 disposals (12 kicks, 5 handballs), 4 marks, 1 goal
Michael played high forward and had six effective inside 50 kicks. He showed strong pressure on the ball carrier and we were happy with his effort, work-rate and temperament. He showed he’s got great composure and always has a lot of time when he’s got the ball in his hands.

WAFL Watch – Defenders

0

Jack Anthony (S) – 15 disposals (12 kicks, 3 handballs), 6 marks,
Jack played as a key back and he’s starting to string some good games together. He took the honours over his opponent Prior with a mix of strong body work in the air, where he had nine spoils. He also demonstrated some sound body work in the contests. Jack’s running patterns were very good and he showed great anticipation of the opposition’s ball movement. Jack didn’t have a goal kicked on him for the day.

Antoni Grover (S) – 21 disposals (15 kicks, 6 handballs), 8 marks,
Antoni played as a key back for the majority of the day and it was a solid performance from him on a range of tall and small opponents. He controlled each opponent with his smart positioning and his physicality. He also had eight ground ball wins and often looked to set up the counter-attack through receiving switch kicks and hard run.
