How Fremantle got Ross Lyon

0

The real story of how Ross Lyon blindsided St Kilda Football Club and ended up at Fremantle, SCOTT GULLAN reports.

Wednesday, September 14, 2011 – St Kilda HQ, Seaford

St Kilda chief executive Michael Nettlefold had spent much of the previous week in discussion with Elite Sports Properties, new managers of coach Ross Lyon.

The season from hell had ended ingloriously, with a loss to Sydney four days earlier, and everyone at St Kilda was keen to move forward.

At the top of Nettlefold’s to-do list was to lock down a new contract for Lyon.

Once a Saint

The biggest football story of last year will reach its next chapter and possibly its conclusion on Friday night when St Kilda takes on the Ross Lyon-coached Fremantle.

In an industry known for poorly kept secrets and innuendo, Lyon’s move to Western Australia came almost completely out of the blue.

It took the media, fans and Fremantle coach Mark Harvey by complete surprise as both Harvey and Lyon had a year remaining on their contracts.

There had been some late-season rumours that Lyon was unhappy with the Saints’ lack of enthusiasm in drawing up a new contract with his management group ESP.

As it turned out, Lyon negotiated his own contract with Fremantle without the knowledge of ESP, which also had Harvey on its books.

Lyon had been strongly linked to the senior coaching position at Melbourne that was eventually given to Mark Neeld. The Demons and Lyon rejected any suggestion they had ever spoken but Melbourne still managed to score one valuable asset from the Saints – strength and conditioning coach Dave Misson.

Lower’s great expectations

0

After being a regular in Fremantle’s midfield last year, Nick Lower faced a frustrating build-up to the 2012 season knowing he could not be selected for the opening two rounds.

The 24-year-old had two weeks remaining on a three-week ban for making forceful front-on contact to Collingwood’s Dale Thomas in round 23 last season and spent the summer knowing his second season at Fremantle would begin on the sidelines.

With his suspension served, Lower made his return to football with WAFL club Perth last Saturday and was impressive, finishing with 27 possessions and seven clearances playing midfield.

A shoulder reconstruction at the end of last season and some hiccups in his recovery also presented challenges for Lower through the pre-season, and he said he was simply glad to get a game under his belt.

“It’s been a frustrating pre-season in a way, not being able to play and having a few injuries along the way, but it was good to get out there and get that body contact again,” Lower said this week.

‘He’ll cop absolute heaps’

Etihad Stadium is confident its security staff will be prepared for the barrage of abuse that is expected to come from angry Saints fans when new Fremantle coach Ross Lyon makes an appearance on the field.

Lyon will coach against his former club for the first time on Friday night and many St Kilda supporters remain furious at the way he walked out on the club.

“We don’t go into detail about our level of security or police numbers at events,” Etihad Stadium spokesman Bill Lane told AFL.com.au on Thursday.

“However, in this instance we are confident that the patrons who attend the game will behave in an appropriate manner.”

Bill Cobb is one of the most senior members of the St Kilda cheer squad; he’s been a part of it for 44 years.

“He’ll cop absolute heaps,” Cobb said on Thursday.

“(As) you would expect, there’s a lot of angry St Kilda supporters out there.

The Freo Line-up – LACH AND LOADED

0
South Australian recruit Lachie Neale will make his AFL debut on Friday night football after being named in Fremantle’s team to take on St Kilda at Etihad Stadium.Livewire forward Hayden Ballantyne returns after serving his two-game suspension, while Nathan Fyfe has been named for the clash against senior coach Ross Lyon’s old side.

Josh Mellington is out with a long-term hamstring injury, and Kepler Bradley was omitted.

Dylan Roberton, Jack Anthony and Bradley are the emergencies.

Neale was having an excellent NAB Cup campaign and appeared set for a round 1 debut before an ankle injury sustained in Victor Harbour against Port Adelaide slowed him.

Freo assistant and senior development coach Simon Lloyd said it was an exciting time for the 18-year-old and his family.

“It’s a very special moment to play your first game of AFL football,” he said.

Lloyd said Neale would play a high-forward role with stints in the midfield, similar to what he did in the pre-season.

AFL hopefuls get a taste of life at Freo

0

Three future AFL hopefuls visited Freo HQ this week as part of the AIS AFL Academy Level 1 Program.

The 17-year-old budding stars watched the team train, toured the facilities and spoke with Freo sports science staff and development coaches to get a feel for life at an AFL club.

Freo’s Western Australian state recruiting manager Adam Jones said it was a great opportunity for Swan Districts’ colts Laurence Grescos of Henley Brook and Herman Humphries of Bunbury, and Claremont colt Jesse Hogan of Scarborough.

“It gives the boys a great insight into what’s required if they get to an AFL club so they can start preparing for the professionalism required and the step up,” he said.

Grescos said the day had been an eye opener for the trio.

“We watched training and saw how Freo prepared for their upcoming game,” he said.

“The professionalism and intensity is at a different level in terms of rehab, training and gym. Basically everything they do.”

WAFL WATCH – Faulks on the road

0

Peter Faulks’ weekly WAFL efforts are showing the improvements in his game that his coaches have been looking for from him.

The 23-year-old was Freo’s WAFL Player of the Week in round 5 of competition for his 20-possession performance from Peel Thunder’s defence.

Freo’s coaching staff have been working on the attacking side of Faulks’ game, and assistant Simon Lloyd said last weekend’s display was one of a number of good recent showings from the former Sydney Swan.

“We’ve always known that Peter’s been very good defensively, but there’s the part of the game when we win the footy,” he said.

“We want him to be attacking and get used as part of the rebound.

“That’s something that’s been a big change in mindset for Peter, but he’s got his head around it and we’re seeing it on the field.”

Fyfe dream

0

It is a dilemma facing more than 100,000 Dream Team coaches this week.

What to do with Fremantle star Nathan Fyfe?

Fyfe was subbed out of last week’s win over the Brisbane Lions with a dislocated shoulder and only 22 points to his name.

In the news we’ve heard so far, Fyfe could play this week against St Kilda or he could undergo surgery and miss the rest of the year.

The only thing clear about this situation is that Dream Teamers have suffered.

In our favour, the Freo game is on Friday night, meaning final teams will be known at 6.20pm AEDT, giving us 90 minutes to decide what to do with Fyfe if he isn’t playing.

Wait until you know whether he’s going to play before you make your moves, but it’s important to start your thinking now.

Michael Walters Update

0

Fremantle small forward Michael Walters is set to return to the club and participate in selected training sessions.

Walters has been training with his WAFL club Swan Districts since January, after Fremantle determined he was not meeting the physical requirements for AFL football.

General manager football operations Chris Bond said since that time the club had worked with the 21-year-old to keep him focused on achieving the standard required for AFL level.

“We are satisfied with the progress Michael has made so far, and believe that he is now at the stage where he could benefit from returning to the club to participate in selected training sessions,” Bond said.

Nat Fyfe injury update

0

Fremantle midfielder Nat Fyfe will travel to Melbourne later this week to have his injured left shoulder examined by a specialist.

Fyfe dislocated his shoulder in Saturday’s win over Brisbane at Paterson’s Stadium.
The 20-year-old and the club are optimistic about his chances of playing against St Kilda on Friday night in Fremantle’s round four clash at Etihad Stadium.

However, general manager of football operations Chris Bond said today that the club would not be taking any risks with Fyfe.

“Along with our medical staff, we will be guided by the specialist’s opinion on what the best course of action is for Nat’s long-term playing future and his general well being,” Bond said.

Meanwhile, Josh Mellington who suffered a hamstring injury in his fifth game for Freo on Saturday, flew to Melbourne earlier today to consult a surgeon.
