Collingwood or bust for Tarrant, says manager

0

Chris Tarrant is prepared to chance his hand in the NAB AFL Draft if Fremantle doesn’t trade him to Collingwood, his manager Paul Connors says.

Tarrant, who spent nine years at the Magpies before joining the Dockers, is desperate to return home and run around in black and white in 2011.

But negotiations between the clubs are progressing slowly at this stage, which has opened the door for Tarrant to enter the draft.

That would result in Fremantle getting no compensation for losing him.

“He’ll be worth whatever Fremantle can get for him, because if they don’t accept that he will go in the national draft,” Connors told afl.com.au’s Trade Week Radio on Friday morning.

The Dockers are currently trying to get a third club – believed to be Adelaide – involved in the deal as they try to secure a more palatable outcome.

Best and worst jumpers rated

4

Forget the inspired decision to draft Stephen Hill ahead of Daniel Rich … dropping the anchor is the best decision Fremantle has made in recent years.

The old purple, red, white and green guernsey (complete with stylised anchor) was a stinker.

Suddenly, the Dockers are the height of fashion after switching to a poweful dark purple jumper with strong and basic Vs in white coming down off the shoulders.

It is so good, the Dockers are now right up there on the “Best of the Jumpers” list.

Stylised logos are so 90s.

It is time to get back to basics and the Dockers have stolen a march on others.

Let’s hope the Bulldogs take note. The stylised puppy on the front of their jumper is so 1997 … sorry, Smorgo and Co, but its time it was torn off.

Thursfield wants trade

0

Richmond will try to secure a trade that will see Will Thursfield move to Fremantle, after the defender expressed his desire for a fresh start.

Thursfield has met with Dockers officials, but with a year to run on his existing contract with the Tigers he is not guaranteed the trade.

Football Operations Manager Craig Cameron has told SEN Thursfield understands he could still be at the club next season.

“We said to him, ‘Mate, it might not eventuate’,” Cameron said.

“If that doesn’t happen, well we’re back at training in late October, and he’ll be welcome back. There’s absolutely no animosity from either side.”

VFL: Seagulls’ Peter Faulks harbouring AFL hopes

0

Williamstown Seagulls’ newest leadership group member Peter Faulks could not resist the invitation to continue plying his trade under coach Peter German.

Sure, the Seagulls’ home ground, Burbank Oval, is closer to his Glenroy home than Casey Fields, home of his former Victorian Football League employer Casey Scorpions.

But the 22-year-old will miss car-pooling with old Scorpions teammates James Wall, Rian McGough and Chris Clay, who were originally from the north-west.

“Door to door, it was 150 kilometres,” he says. “That didn’t worry us. Some of the best times we had were in the car.”

When Faulks heard of German signing with the Seagulls, he immediately entertained the prospect of a move to reunite with his coach of the previous 12 months.

“Career-wise, it didn’t worry me either way, to be honest,” he says. “I just wanted to play under ‘Germo’. I’ve got so much respect for him as a coach. He got the best out of me last season. He really challenged me to play my best football.”

Fremantle lands VFL defender via Gold Coast

1

Fremantle has gained pre-listed Gold Coast defender Peter Faulks in exchange for the upgrade of a late selection in next month’s NAB AFL Draft.

In its first deal of trade week, Fremantle swapped its third-round pick (No.55) for Gold Coast’s fourth-round selection (61) to secure Faulks, who spent 2007 and 2008 on the Sydney Swans’ senior list.

Gold Coast can pre-list up to 10 former AFL players under its draft concessions.

Faulks, 22, played full-back for Williamstown in 2010, and made the VFL team of with year.

A former Casey Scorpions teammate of Fremantle defender Alex Silvagni, he impressed the club at the recent NAB AFL Draft State Combine.

“He excelled particularly in the 20m sprint and vertical jump testing. At 195cm, he is a key defender who has a fierce competitive nature and elite closing speed,” Fremantle recruiting manager Brad Lloyd said.

Fremantle has lost key defender Chris Tarrant, who is likely to join Collingwood during trade week, while Antoni Grover is 30 and Luke McPharlin turns 29 in December.

However, the club would be heartened by its recent VFL record, with rookie-listed midfielder Michael Barlow enjoying a very successful debut season in 2010 until he suffered a serious leg injury.

Presti won’t dictate Tarrant trade

0

Collingwood will pursue Fremantle defender Chris Tarrant even if full-back Simon Prestigiacomo decides to play on.

Prestigiacomo, who will be 33 in January, has been given time to make his decision on whether to press into a 16th season.

Collingwood recruiting manager Derek Hine said Tarrant would be considered for a “multi-dimensional role” rather than a spot solely in the backline.

“[Tarrant] would just give us another dimension to our list,” Hine told afl.com.au‘s Trade Week Radio.

“In Simon’s case, he’s probably a little bit more one-dimensional and I don’t think that’s a great secret.

“I don’t think that will have any reflection on whether Chris comes in or he doesn’t.”

Hine also said Tarrant’s potential return to the Pies wouldn’t affect the development of premiership defenders Nathan Brown and Ben Reid, who both took giant steps in 2010.

Eagles defend Hunter after Heath Black jibe

0

West Coast have returned serve at former Fremantle utility player Heath Black for damning comments he made about 2006 premiership star Adam Hunter after a regional grand final on Sunday.

Chief executive Trevor Nisbett said the way Black questioned Hunter’s courage after a brutal South West Football League grand final in Bunbury was “staggering”.

Hunter, an Eagles life member after 151 games and booting the winning goal in the 2006 grand final against Sydney, received six stitches to a cut across his eye from an off-the-ball incident early in the game.

Black, who played 192 games for Fremantle and St Kilda before battling depression and alcoholism, coached Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault to a surprise victory over red-hot South Bunbury at Hands Oval.

Black said HBL took their opponents “mentally and physically into areas that they have never been to.”

Magpies drive hard bargain over Tarrant

1

Fremantle could be left with nothing for homesick defender Chris Tarrant as Collingwood prepare to dig in on a deal to win back the services of their one-time enigmatic forward.

The Dockers and Magpies discussed initial plans yesterday at the opening of the AFL’s annual trade week, but remain divided over an acceptable deal.

Spicing up the issue is Tarrant’s influential manager Paul Connors, who just 12 months ago went through a protracted week when he tried to deliver former St Kilda captain Luke Ball to Collingwood. The Saints’ hard stance and Collingwood’s refusal to compromise, saw Ball forced into the national draft where he was eventually selected by the Magpies with the 30th pick overall.

Tarrant, whose career has been resurrected as a defender under Dockers coach Mark Harvey, only wants to return to his former club.

I wanted to drop the anchor, says Bell

0

As the Dockers prepare for a radical rebrand, Fremantle legend Peter Bell has admitted he wanted the club to dump both the iconic anchor and the contentious team song.

Fans anger at plans for a radical change to the home-and-away guernsey for 2011 exploded online, with the popular Dockerland website registering hundreds of complaints about proposed changes to the guernsey.

The club is preparing to unveil a radical new home-and-away guernsey for next season at Saturday’s Doig Medal count which will feature three parallel chevrons across the shoulders.

The anchor – synonymous with club’s maritime tradition and also the weight of expectation over the years – is tipped to be moved to the back of the guernsey.

And former skipper Bell said the idea was brought up by him during the end of his stint as the club’s most senior player.

“In my last couple of years there I did ask the management there to consider getting rid of the anchor and the song,” Bell said.

“I just thought the song was a bit boring.
