Mzungu on the rapid rise

0

Some past articles on Tendai Mzungu for your light reading.

Perth coach Andrew Jarman and his predecessor at EFTel Oval, Simon Eastaugh, believe hard-working Demons midfielder Tendai Mzungu can become WA football’s next rags-to-riches story.

The 1997 Norwood premiership teammates said the 24-year-old Perth ball magnet was capable of stepping up from State level to the AFL, and follow a similar career path to that of mature-age Fremantle recruit Michael Barlow.

Despite ranking second in the WAFL for disposals this season with 253 touches at an average of more than 28 a game, Mzungu isn’t getting ahead of himself.

He leads the competition for kicks (181) and has broken free to take 57 marks (ranked eighth), the majority of which have been uncontested in a testament to his hard-running style of game.

Grover on track to double ton

0

Popular Fremantle defender Antoni Grover has secured an extension to his career and the chance to cross a milestone that only four other Dockers have achieved.

Grover, 30, has ended months of speculation on his future with a new one-year contract to possibly reach 200 games late into next season.

The durable full-back has played 181 games since his debut against Sydney colossus Tony Lockett at the WACA Ground back in 1999.

Grover would join reigning Dockers games record-holder Shane Parker (238), champion captain Matthew Pavlich (236), centreliner Shaun McManus (228) and recently retired follower Paul Hasleby on 208 games over the double-century mark.

Michael Barlow optimism rises

1

First-year Fremantle sensation Michael Barlow is on track to make a Round 1 return next season.

Barlow, 22, has received encouraging medical reports on the left leg he broke in Round 14 of a stunning debut season.

While the club remains cautious in its approach to Barlow’s recovery, there is optimism the ball magnet will make a full recovery.

“All the indications from his rehabilitation are that he’s on track,” a club spokesman said yesterday.

Barlow snapped the tibia and fibula of his left leg at Subiaco Oval in a collision with teammate Rhys Palmer.

Such was the extent of the break, there were early fears Barlow would struggle to recover for the start of next season.

The Dockers selected Barlow with their first selection in this year’s rookie draft. He was promoted to the senior list after dominating in the club’s three NAB Cup pre-season clashes.

His 33 disposals and two goals in Round 1 was the most possessions gained by a player on debut since the League began keeping statistics in 1992.

Fremantle happy with trade week

0

Fremantle has successfully negotiated a trade for Chris Tarrant’s return to Collingwood, securing picks 43 and 55 in the 2010 NAB AFL Draft in exchange for pick 44 and the 30-year-old defender.

The Tarrant trade was the fourth and final deal completed by Fremantle during the exchange period, which ended today.

Earlier, Fremantle secured Adelaide ruckman Jonathon Griffin. The 24-year-old was traded in exchange for Fremantle’s round four selection (pick No.61 overall) in the draft.

Griffin made his debut for the Crows in 2007 and has played 41 AFL games. He was recruited in the 2005 Rookie Draft (pick No. 21) from East Fremantle.

The other trades included Tendai Mzungu and Peter Faulks, who were both pre-listed players with the Gold Coast Suns.

Subiaco Oval gets new name

0

WA’S home of football, Subiaco Oval, has been renamed Patersons Stadium, with Perth-based stockbroker Patersons Securities securing a four-year, multi-million dollar deal to rebrand the historic ground.

It is the first time in its 102-year existence that Subiaco Oval has been rebranded, after the Subiaco council blocked a $5 million bid from mobile phone retailer Crazy Johns in 2003.

WA Football Commission chief executive Wayne Bradshaw confirmed the new name on Friday, describing the deal as a “commercial reality” that will benefit grassroots football in WA.

“We think it’s inevitable that the stadium will need to go down the naming rights path, and from our perspective we’re trying to deliver community benefit,” Bradshaw said on Friday.

“We’ve been looking for a number of years to achieve a naming rights sponsor and we’re very pleased to do so with a sponsor of the calibre of Patersons.

I owe Pies: Tarrant

1

Collingwood recruit Chris Tarrant says he wants to make up for the ill-discipline that marred his first stint at the club.

After four years at Fremantle, Tarrant’s wish to be traded back to the Magpies was fulfilled on the final day of trade week.

“I really owe this club,” Tarrant said at his first press conference back in black and white.

“I’ve got something to offer this club and I just can’t wait to get that opportunity to have another crack at it.”

Tarrant, who ran second in the Collingwood best-and-fairest in 2003 and was the club’s leading goalkicker five times, was packed off to Fremantle after a disappointing 2006 season.

A few months before he headed west, he and teammate Ben Johnson had been involved in a fight outside a nightclub in Port Melbourne.

Tarrant deal finally done

0

Fremantle defender Chris Tarrant has returned to his original AFL club, Collingwood, after Freo and the Magpies agreed to an eleventh-hour trade on Monday afternoon.

Collingwood receives Tarrant and a third-round NAB AFL Draft pick, No.44, while Fremantle receives a round two pick, No.43, and a round three pick, No.55.

The deal was finalised half an hour before the end of the trading period along with a trade with West Coast where Collingwood gave away its compensation pick for losing Josh Fraser to Gold Coast in exchange for pick No.45.

Tarrant moved to the Dockers in 2006 in exchange for Paul Medhurst and pick No.8, which the Magpies used on premiership defender Ben Reid.

That was after a nine-year, 161-game career at Collingwood which netted 299 goals, an All-Australian selection and five leading-goalkicker awards.

Mzungu heads to Freo

0

Fresh from last year’s success with mature-age selection Michael Barlow, Fremantle has taken WAFL star Tendai Mzungu as a trade from Gold Coast.

Fremantle has received the 24-year-old Perth Demons best-and-fairest and pick 44 in this year’s NAB AFL Draft in exchange for their pick 38.

Mzungu is a running half-back who was apparently being eyed by both the Bulldogs and the Hawks before the Dockers snapped him up.

A good performance at the state draft screening at the University of WA, where he did well in both speed and endurance, helped get him over the line.

Griffin joins Freo

0

Adelaide ruckman Jonathon Griffin has been traded to Fremantle for NAB AFL Draft round-four selection No.61.

The trade comes hot on the heels of the Crows obtaining young ruckman Sam Jacobs from Carlton.

The Dockers received pick 61 from Gold Coast as part of the Peter Faulks deal earlier in trade week.

Griffin requested a trade back to his state of origin for personal reasons, putting in his request before the season had finished.Adelaide football manager Phil Harper said the club had done what it could to help the 24-year-old get home to assist in dealing with family issues.

“It will be a compassionate trade really. We’ll let him go home and help out with his father and brother,” Harper said.

Griffin was first drafted by the Crows from East Fremantle in the 2005 NAB AFL Rookie draft (pick 21) and was elevated to the main list after his first year.
