Scott to be named new Cat coach: reports
0Chris Scott will be announced as Geelong’s new coach on Monday morning, according to reports.
Scott is believed to have won the race to replace Mark Thompson ahead of Geelong assistant Brenton Sanderson and Gold Coast assistant and former Cat Ken Hinkley.
Scott, 34, has been an assistant coach at Fremantle since 2008.
His twin brother Brad this year coached North Melbourne to ninth position in his first season at the helm at Arden Street.
Chris’s appointment to Geelong would mark the first time in VFL/AFL history that twins have coached against each other.
Scott played 215 games with the Brisbane Lions and was a key figure in the side’s three consecutive flags from 2001-03, although he missed the 2003 grand final because of injury.
Lions veteran Simon Black, who played with both brothers, told The Age the pair had been “very determined when they jumped into coaching ranks.”
VFL boss praises new Docker Peter Faulks
0New Docker Peter Faulks has been backed by his former VFL boss to rapidly assert himself as Fremantle’s new key backman, filling the void left by departed linchpin Chris Tarrant.
Williamstown football manager Chris Dixon said the Dockers had struck gold in trading pick No.55 in the national draft to Gold Coast for the pre-listed Faulks and selection No.61.
He said the 22-year-old’s performance throughout the Seagulls’ 2010 campaign showed he was ready for the rigours of the AFL.
Faulks was drafted by Sydney in 2006, but de-listed two years later without making his senior debut, knocking back a rookie-list tryout with the Swans before re-entering the VFL.
Cincinnati Dockers finish 4-2 in 2010 Nationals
0The Cincinnati Dockers Australian Rules Football Club finished their 14th season by going 4-2 in the USAFL National Championship Tournament. Both the main squad (competing in division 3), and the reserve squad (competing in division 4) finished 2-1, earning them second place in their respective groups.
Cincinnati’s A squad started their tournament with a hard-fought Saturday morning victory, defeating the Portland Power 54-44. Their second match took place later that afternoon, where they defeated the Atlanta Kookaburras 51-27. Their third match in the group stage would be played the following Sunday morning against the top seeded Austin Crows, with a spot in the Division 3 Grand Final in the balance. Despite a valiant effort and intense play, the Dockers would just come up short, falling to the eventual Division 3 champions 36-14.
The Reserves played in one of the first games of the tournament on Saturday morning against the Chicago/Baltimore/Washington team. A strong second half earned the Dockers a 23-10 victory. A long rest later, the Dockers took the field again, challenging Orange County/Des Moines.

Freo’s Dodd heads to draft
0Fremantle defender Steven Dodd has wasted no time lodging intentions to continue his AFL career with a nomination for this year’s national draft.
Dodd filled out and signed AFL draft nomination declaration forms with his manager Colin Young almost immediately after trade week concluded.
Dodd had been told by Dockers management that if he wasn’t traded he would be de-listed as Fremantle continued their youth policy into season 2011.
The hard-core 27-year-old still believes he has plenty of front-line football left after 101 AFL games at Fremantle.
Dockers overboard – Freo axe four more!
0Fremantle quartet Steven Dodd, Ryan Murphy, Brock O’Brien and Ben Bucovaz are set to be delisted as the major casualties of the club’s aggressive week of trading.
The Dockers have already made significant changes to their squad and the group appear certain to have their careers terminated within a fortnight.
Fremantle traded Chris Tarrant to Collingwood, delisted Chris Hall and farewelled the retiring Paul Hasleby, Dean Solomon, Scott Thornton and Des Headland.
But the acquisition of Adelaide ruckman Jonathon Griffin, WAFL player Tendai Mzungu and VFL defender Peter Faulks, and the re-signings of Antoni Grover, Michael Walters and Clayton Hinkley have left only three vacancies on their list.
Football operations manager Chris Bond said the club would use picks 20, 44 and 55 at next month’s national draft to add more talented youngsters to the squad.
Keeping it all in the family business
0An excellent past article about Jonathon Griffin for your light reading.
The Adelaide ruckman is embracing his indigenous heritage and it’s helping him further his football career with the Crows, writes Emma Quayle.
It was a little over a year ago that Jonathon Griffin’s teammates found out. At the end of his third and best year in Adelaide, the young ruckman invited his mother and grandfather to the club’s best and fairest night, to show them what it was like. As he wandered by their table during the night, Griffin’s teammate Graham Johncock looked, paused, and then doubled back.
“Who are you here with?” he asked Griffin’s grandfather, Henry, an indigenous man. “Jonathon Griffin,” he replied. “He’s my grandson.”
Griffin’s aboriginality was never some thing he kept to himself, or denied in any way. When kids came around to his place after school and he knew his pop would be there, he never worried about what they would think, but he did wonder how they would react.
“I was just a bit conscious of it,” he said. “But it was never some thing that concerned me. I had a couple of friends sort of ask the question, and I explained, and that was it, everything was fine.”
