Harvey could come to Eagles: Worsfold

By SportsNewsFirst

West Coast coach John Worsfold has thrown former Fremantle coach Mark Harvey a stunning lifeline, declaring an interest in hiring the dumped Dockers man.

Harvey was unceremoniously axed as the coach of the Dockers last month – after failing to take the side to a 2011 finals appearance – and was swiftly replaced by former St Kilda coach Ross Lyon.

Worsfold watched good mate and long-time assistant coach Peter Sumich defect to the Dockers last week.

Grover in Freo’s best 22

0

Veteran defender Antoni Grover has been told he is still in Fremantle’s best 22 after seeking out new coach Ross Lyon for assurances on his future.

The 31-year-old is out of contract for 2012, with negotiations over a fresh one-year deal reaching a stalemate.

Grover is understood to be weighing up his future.

He has the option of re-signing a contract on significantly reduced terms but wants a deal similar to 2010.

A role as an indigenous officer in the mining industry looms as a post-football career option if Grover were to retire.

His manager, Anthony van der Wielen, confirmed the 201-game Docker visited the club’s headquarters at Fremantle Oval on Wednesday specifically to speak to Lyon.

Until that point, the back man had not talked to the former St Kilda coach in the three weeks since Lyon’s surprise appointment to the senior position at Fremantle.

We won’t abandon draft: Lyon

0

New coach Ross Lyon says Fremantle is not going to abandon its long-term strategy to build a strong list through the draft, indicating that the club will value its draft picks during next week’s exchange period.

As things stand, Fremantle will enter the 2011 NAB AFL Draft with selections 16, 38 and 56, also acquiring a compensation pick at the end of the first round after midfielder Rhys Palmer moved to GWS as an uncontracted signing.

However, Brisbane Lions forward/ruckman Mitch Clark has indicated that he wants to join Fremantle during trade week in a deal that would likely cost the club draft picks.

Lyon built a track record of recycling mature-age AFL players during his five seasons as St Kilda coach, but he said it was not a strategy that would necessarily be transferred to Fremantle.

“There’s a strong understanding of the long-term strategy that Fremantle introduced probably four years ago, when they were an older list and not playing finals, to really value their draft picks and keep building on the youth,” Lyon said from Fremantle Oval on Saturday.

By SportsNewsFirst

West Coast great Peter Sumich has missed a chance for a heroes send-off by not attending the Eagles club champion presentations in Perth.

Sumich has fuelled fire to his shock Eagles walkout with his decision to miss his club’s end of season fairest-and-best function.

It is also looming as highly unlikely that West Coast will confirm a contract extension for senior coach and club icon John Worsfold at their 2011 end-of-season function on Friday.

Hill on the up after time trial

0

The 2011 NAB AFL Draft Combine finished up at Etihad Stadium on Friday with West Australian youngster Brad Hill providing another highlight with his win in the 3km time trial.

Hill, the younger brother of Fremantle’s Stephen, backed up his combine record score of 16.1 in the shuttle run on Thursday with a winning time of 9m52s in the gruelling test of endurance.

AFL national talent manager Kevin Sheehan was confident Hill’s performances had significantly boosted his chances of selection at November’s NAB AFL Draft.

“For a young guy to do that, there will be even more improvement in him in an AFL environment,” Sheehan said.

“Like all of these young men, he’s just developing as a player and getting the confidence that they can mix it among the best.

“Brad is following the pathway that Stephen showed when he just grew in confidence in his 18th year. They all mature at different rates as footballers, as athletes and as young men, so I think this will give Brad great confidence that he can follow his brother into the AFL.

Port Adelaide rule out Harvey interest

By SportsNewsFirst

Port Adelaide have ruled out any interest in offering sacked Fremantle coach Mark Harvey an immediate route back into the AFL.

Harvey is available after his shock ejection from the Dockers and Port are searching for at least three coaches to add to the team headed by Matty Primus.

Coming off a terrible season, but buoyed by the cash injection offered by the AFL and a raft of re-signings, Port need to find support for Primus after the departure of Dean Laidley and Jason Cripps changing roles.

Brotherhood

0

You support Carlton and you hate Collingwood.

It has been five losses straight by your Blues to the dreaded Magpies and you watch with thinly-veiled disgust after the final siren as the players from both sides happily mill around, catching up like long lost mates.

The reason for that is because in many cases, that’s precisely what they are.

Footballers are like a brotherhood and at Etihad Stadium on Friday, the ties that bind a new brotherhood were cast in stone at the final day of the 2011 NAB AFL Draft Combine.

It is why Bradley Hill, the winner of both the beep test and the time trial at the Combine, could walk off Etihad for the final time chatting animatedly to Ahmed Saad as though he was his best buddy.

Hill, the younger brother of Fremantle jet Stephen, is 18 and from Joondalup in the boom northern suburbs of Perth. Saad is four years older and played his footy at Roxburgh Park, a new northern suburb in Melbourne. And he grew up in Egypt.

Andrew Lovett trains in hope of AFL return

0

St Kilda discard Andrew Lovett is training in private in the hope of an AFL return.

The midfielder wants to return to football at the highest level after being acquitted of two counts of rape in July.

Lovett said he would nominate for the draft and has taken steps to restore his fitness in recent months.

It is understood Lovett, who has not played AFL since he was traded from Essendon in 2009, has embarked on an intensive physical conditioning program in Melbourne.

Sources close to Lovett, who is 29 next month, and has played 88 games at Essendon, said his progress was encouraging.

But the only club which has appeared willing to consider Lovett is Greater Western Sydney.

The Giants appear unlikely to take the former matchwinner on board unless their position is swayed by his commitment over the next two months.

Another Hill to climb

0

Western Australian Brad Hill produced a stunning feat of endurance on day three of the NAB AFL Draft Combine to set a new record with his score of 16.1 in the 20m shuttle run.

The dreaded beep test, as it is commonly known, was eagerly watched by a crowd of AFL recruiters who saw Sydney Swan Jarrad McVeigh’s 2002 mark of 15.5 equalled or bettered by four players at Etihad Stadium.

The Western Jets’ Will Hoskin-Elliott was next with 15.12 followed by the Calder Cannons’ Tom Sheridan (15.7) and Bendigo Pioneer Sam Kerridge.

Hill, who is the brother of Fremantle speed machine Stephen, gave his chances of being selected at the NAB AFL Draft a shot in the arm with the impressive run.

“Stephen Hill holds the record for the agility test and Brad has now smashed the beep test record with a magnificent 16.1,” AFL national talent manager Kevin Sheehan said.

Return to WA a possibility for Collingwood premiership defender Alan Toovey

0

The future of Collingwood premiership defender Alan Toovey is up in the air with the Magpies and his management team at loggerheads over a new deal.

And it is understood Toovey would be open to a possible return to Western Australia.

There is speculation the Magpies won’t be able to fit the 24-year-old West Australian and his increased money demands under the salary cap and they could seek to offload him during next week’s exchange period.
