Mitch Clark dealing hots up

0

Brisbane has made discreet inquiries about rising West Coast youngster Scott Lycett in trade bargaining for departed Lions big man Mitch Clark.

The athletic tall forward-ruckman has been researched as Lions management consider West Coast offers in frantic bidding for Clark who wants to resume his career back in his home state of Western Australia.

Lycett, just 19, was a second round choice and 29 overall by West Coast at last year’s national draft and played just one senior AFL game in his debut season.

Clark, who turns 24 just two days after AFL trading closes on Monday October 17, has indicated a preference to be traded to Fremantle.

AFL blocks GWS ‘super-trade’

0

The AFL has rejected a proposed multi-club trade that would have seen highly rated Western Australian 17 year-old Jaeger O’Meara land at Greater Western Sydney.

Under the League’s list building rules for GWS, teams can trade with the new franchise for one of four picks in next Monday’s mini-draft of players born between January 1 and April 30, 1994.

O’Meara is the most sought after member of that group, with several clubs showing strong interest.

He and other eligible players cannot be signed directly by the Giants.

But in an unexpected twist, it is believed that GWS had hoped to acquire the first pick in the mini-draft – and use it to secure O’Meara – by trading it and then receiving it back from a third or fourth club.

However, the AFL’s head of football operations Adrian Anderson rejected the proposal on the basis that it was against the spirit of the list-building rules.

GWS plot to snag top youngster

0

Greater Western Sydney is exploring ways to keep the country’s most sought-after teenager, Western Australia’s Jaeger O’Meara, for itself.

The Giants can trade the rights to four 17-year-olds over the next two years as part of the new club’s draft concessions, with the original understanding that they could not hoard these players.

But GWS has found a possible loophole that could allow it to trade the first selection in next week’s mini-draft to one club, then do a separate deal with a third party to get it back, once it is traded on to that second club.

Clark talks at a standstill

0

Fremantle and the Brisbane Lions are at a standoff over Mitch Clark.

The 23-year-old big man, who has played 82 games with the Lions since being drafted with pick nine in the 2005 NAB AFL Draft, has requested a trade to his home state of Western Australia.

Fremantle has been seen as the frontrunner to secure Clark’s services, but the Lions were not satisfied with the offer of pick 16 in this year’s draft in exchange for the tall.

“It would be fair to say there was next to no movement with Mitch Clark today,” Lions national talent manager Rob Kerr said as he left trade talks at Etihad Stadium on Monday afternoon.

“I think we value Mitch in a different way to what Fremantle values him at this stage.”

Fremantle’s reluctance to offer a greater package to the Lions could bring West Coast into the frame.

Freo rules out Saints pair

0

Fremantle has no interest in recruiting St Kilda pair Farren Ray and Brett Peake despite speculation the Saints will have to off-load players due to salary cap constraints.

Ray and Peake are yet to sign new contracts with St Kilda, and speculation had linked them to Fremantle due to their West Australian backgrounds and relationship with former St Kilda coach Ross Lyon.

Fremantle football manager Chris Bond categorically stated his club did not have Ray and Peake in its sights but said there had been positive talks with the Brisbane Lions over getting Mitch Clark to Fremantle.

“Yeah there has been [progression]. We’ll keep working with Brisbane on that and hopefully we can come to some arrangement,” Bond said as he left Etihad Stadium on day one of trade week.

“You’re only confident when it gets over the line. We are, we’ve got Mitch who wants to come to us and we’d like to get a trade done and to have him at the club by the end of trade week I think helps everyone involved.”

Home is where Suma’s heart is

Peter Sumich was speaking from the heart when he said he had always been a Freo boy.

While his spiritual AFL home will always be West Coast, where he played in two premierships and helped to coach another, going back to where it all began will do him no harm.

Suma was recruited from South Fremantle after cutting his teeth with Cockburn. He coached the Bulldogs in his own right in 2000 and 2001, guiding them into the ’01 WAFL Grand Final.

Pavlich wins a sixth Doig

0

Fremantle captain Matthew Pavlich has tonight added to his growing legacy at the club by winning his sixth Doig Medal as Fremantle’s best player for 2011.

Pavlich finished on 144 votes, just ahead of Nat Fyfe on 141. It was a thrilling finish for the award between Fremantle’s greatest ever player and a youngster from Lake Grace who rose to prominence with a brilliant second season of AFL.

Greg Broughton finished third on 118 votes, while defensive lynchpin Luke McPharlin rounded off the top four on 108 votes.

Pavlich capped off a remarkable season of individual milestones in which he broke the club games record and played his 250th game. He also broke Peter Bell’s record of 107 games as Fremantle captain.

The captain has been the focal point of Freo’s attack throughout his career, but in 2011 he was called upon to play mainly as a midfielder because of the club’s injury issues throughout the season.

Hot summer for Fremantle Dockers

0

Seven days after Geelong held the Premiership Cup aloft, Fremantle hit the training track for a demanding running session as the Dockers eye vast improvement next year.

New coach Ross Lyon addressed the playing group as a whole for the first time at Fremantle Oval yesterday morning, with new assistant Peter Sumich also introduced.

With a portion of the squad recovering from post-season surgery after a torrid season in the injury front, there were only about 15 players who completed long-distance runs.
