Port Adelaide rule out Harvey interest
Port Adelaide have ruled out any interest in offering sacked Fremantle coach Mark Harvey an immediate route back into the AFL.
Harvey is available after his shock ejection from the Dockers and Port are searching for at least three coaches to add to the team headed by Matty Primus.
Coming off a terrible season, but buoyed by the cash injection offered by the AFL and a raft of re-signings, Port need to find support for Primus after the departure of Dean Laidley and Jason Cripps changing roles.
But Harvey will not be that man, according to Port football manager Peter Rohde despite his credentials and availability.
“We are not talking to him about being here next year,” Rohde told radio 5AA.
Port’s search is being complicated St Kilda looking for a senior coach simultaneously, with Scott Watters believed to be high on the South Australian club’s hitlist if he fails in his bid to take over from Ross Lyon.
“We are deep in discussions with many high quality candidates,” Port Adelaide chief executive officer Keith Thomas said.
“But as we are attempting to add up to four new people to our team, it is important that we complete this process in a thorough order to ensure that we get the best possible mix of experience and skills to complete the coaching team.
“This takes a bit of time to do properly, but we are not far off being able to make some announcements. We ask our supporters to have patience. The team is coming together.”
Meanwhile, Port’s Daniel Motlop is shaping as a possible player during trade week, with Rohde confirming there had been some interest for the mercurial forward.
Relations between club and player appear to have broken down completely, with the player making his feelings known earlier this week via his Twitter account.
“Hurry up trade week,” Motlop tweeted.
And Rohde said discussions were still continuing about compensation from GWS in return for retired pair Chad Cornes and Dean Brogan.
Rhode said the 2004 premiership duo would definitely be at the AFL’s 18th club next season.
