Fremantle plays guilt card with Chris Tarrant

0

Fremantle coach Mark Harvey has played the guilt card ahead of the impending tug-of-war for Chris Tarrant’s services, claiming the departing defender owes the club for turning his career around.

The Dockers were dealt a major blow earlier this week when Tarrant advised the club he would be returning to Melbourne next season due to personal reasons.

Fremantle’s only chance to receive compensation for the out-of-contract Tarrant is if a trade with a rival club can be worked out.

But should Tarrant choose to instead nominate for either the pre-season or AFL Draft, Fremantle will receive nothing.

Tarrant spent the majority of his career as a key forward but struggled during his first two years at the Dockers.

Hawthorn open talks with Chris Tarrant about move

Hawthorn intend to open discussions with Chris Tarrant once Fremantle’s season concludes, by which time the futures of Campbell Brown and Michael Osborne are likely to be known.

It is understood Hawthorn formally contacted Tarrant’s manager, Paul Connors, last week to register interest in the 29-year-old Fremantle defender, who intends to return to Melbourne in the off-season.

The Hawks, who have not been able to replace Trent Croad in defence since his career ended in the 2008 grand final, have been smitten by Tarrant’s last 18 months in defence for the Dockers.

Tarrant heads for trade market

AFL power clubs Hawthorn and Carlton are poised to strike as prime movers in bidding to sign departing Fremantle star Chris Tarrant.

Tarrant is expected to inform Dockers officials immediately after Fremantle end their finals campaign that he plans to return to his home town Melbourne, whether he continues his AFL career or not.

Despite ambitious claims from Dockers management that Tarrant could yet sign a new contract to extend his stay in the west, the experienced big man looks certain not to continue at Fremantle.

Motlop to Freo?

0

Port Adelaide forward Daniel Motlop to Fremantle – Power defender Chad Cornes to Hawthorn. And West Coast ruckman Dean Cox to the highest bidder.

But Cox will not go to the financially strapped Port Adelaide – regardless of its needs to find a support act for Dean Brogan while developing its young ruckmen.

The trade winds are blowing early as AFL clubs are compelled to fill gaps in their lists away from the draft that is compromised with the advent of expansion clubs Gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney in the next three years.

And the Power – with Motlop and Cornes appearing out of the frame in the new era at Alberton – is the early headline grabber of the extended, eight-day AFL trade period that begins on October 4.

Motlop, 28, and Cornes, 30, are on contract to Port in 2011.

Motlop will return to football – after serving a two-match suspension – but in the SANFL with North Adelaide rather than in the Power’s away clash with St Kilda.

His short-term future at Alberton is based on earning his recall to the AFL by finding form in the SANFL.

His long-term future is far more complicated, considering his off-field issues. His six-year-old son, Jesse, is living in Perth, increasing the prospect of a compassionate trade in line with ruckman Darren Jolly’s move from Sydney Swans to Collingwood for family reasons.
