Hawks keen on Tarrant, but …

0

Hawthorn has expressed genuine interest in trading for Fremantle defender Chris Tarrant but realises it is not his number one priority.

Tarrant is seeking a return to Melbourne, preferably with his original club Collingwood, but the Hawks have been strongly linked to him.

Hawthorn general manager player personnel and strategy Chris Pelchen says the club would love to have Tarrant on board.

“There’s genuine interest there, there’s no doubt, but Paul Connors his manager has explained he’d like to go to Collingwood and we’ve respected that at this point in time,” Pelchen said as he arrived at Etihad Stadium for the commencement of trade week on Tuesday morning.

Pelchen said it was unlikely the Hawks would be part of any early trades.

“It wouldn’t be this early. We’ve had discussions with all clubs except St Kilda to this point and it would be fair to say it’s very preliminary,” he said.

Anthony floated as bait

0

The future of uncontracted Fremantle defender Chris Tarrant continues to be the main focus of trade rumours one day before the start of the player exchange period.

Latest newspaper speculation has out-of-favour Collingwood forward John Anthony as possible bait in any trade talks.

Tarrant, who played 161 matches for the Magpies from 1998-2006 before moving west has reportedly nominated Collingwood as his preferred destination.

The Herald Sun newspaper says Anthony, 22, may be the best option for the Magpies in any negotiations with Fremantle.

He kicked 50 goals in 2009, but played only seven matches this season, losing his spot in the Magpies’ best 22 to Chris Dawes.

The Herald Sun also reported that Essendon was determined to hold onto midfielder Bachar Houli, 22, who has been linked with Richmond and Carlton, and would resist if he requested a trade, potentially forcing him into the NAB AFL Draft.

Mitch Clark hopes to play for Fremantle

0

Ruckman Mitch Clark is the latest Brisbane Lions player to request a trade, according to separate reports in the Herald Sun and on Channel 9’s The Footy Show.

Clark, 22, is contracted to the Lions, but has requested a trade home to Western Australia, where he hopes to play with Fremantle.

The Lions, who have already lost best-and-fairest winner Michael Rischitelli to Gold Coast, are also reeling from utility Jared Brennan’s decision to leave the club and are unlikely to agree to a trade for Clark.

The Herald Sun also reports the Lions and Suns have struck a deal for Brennan, with the AFL’s 17th team agreeing to relinquish a top-10 draft pick in exchange for the 26-year-old.

The Lions could receive another first-round pick ahead of November’s NAB AFL Draft, with the Western Bulldogs considering on-trading the pick they received as compensation for Gold Coast recruit Jarrod Harbrow to secure Justin Sherman.

Blues want backs

0

Carlton champion Chris Judd has flagged intentions for his emerging Blues to import an experienced key defender during next week’s AFL annual trading.

The Blues will make a play for out-of-contract Fremantle pair Chris Tarrant and Luke McPharlin, but appear at long odds to attract either classy big backman to join Judd and his young troops.

Carlton heavyweights will also join what is expected to be a heated chase for disgruntled Brisbane utility Jared Brennan.

Brennan averaged 20 possessions a game with the Lions this season floating mainly through midfield, but is a highly capable running defender as well.

But Brennan, 26, seems more likely to head to new club Gold Coast with his distaste for Melbourne’s bitterly cold winter weather.

Judd told an exclusive Corporate Sports luncheon before last week’s AFL grand final that a priority to building his Blues toward a top four team is adding a key defender.

Chris Tarrant’s bid to rejoin Pies

1

Chris Tarrant has declared Collingwood his preferred club, but that does not mean a romantic return will come easily.

At least three clubs are after his services in an intense race for the veteran defender just six days out from trade week.

Such interest means Fremantle, which has lost the defender after four years because of business and family reasons, is likely to play hardball.

The Dockers will be particular in their needs. In return. they will want a player to fit their list model.

If the Magpies can not satisfy the Dockers, they will be comfortable enough to allow him to nominate for the national or pre-season drafts and lose him for nothing.

It may take a three-way deal to get Tarrant to Collingwood if the Pies can not come up with enough to satisfy the Dockers.

The scenario looms as similar to Luke Ball last year, when the Saints refused to budge and forced the midfielder into the draft. Ball landed at Collingwood, his preferred new home, but he was at risk of being picked up by another club.

Fremantle interested in Richardson

0

Rebounding defender Cam Richardson was on the cusp of selection this time last season and missed out on playing in last year’s premiership team. Now, the 22-year-old has impressed so much with the Roosters that he would be one of the first picked and an AFL career beckons with several AFL clubs showing some interest, including Gold Coast and Fremantle.

Roosters coach Gerard FitzGerald is a massive fan of Richardson’s work ethic.

”He [Richardson] responded to missing out last year in a very positive way and I really admire him for that. He just really knuckled down and put in a massive amount of work into his preparation and full credit to him, he’s playing in a grand final [on] Sunday,” FitzGerald said.

Josh Fraser deal likely

3

Collingwood ruckman Josh Fraser may join Fremantle in a direct swap for defender Chris Tarrant during trade week.

Fraser, 29 in January, appears certain to be left out of Collingwood’s team for the Grand Final and has probably played his last game for the Magpies.

Fraser, the prized No.1 selection from the 1999 national draft, has played 200 games for Collingwood during 11 seasons, but is out of favour with coach Mick Malthouse and is keen to move to re-energise his career.

He has played nine games this season – and only one since Round 12.

Darren Jolly claimed Collingwood’s No. 1 ruck place after arriving from Sydney and journeyman Leigh Brown is his preferred back-up.

Fremantle chief executive Steve Rosich declined to comment on any Tarrant-Fraser swap deal yesterday, but it appears to suit all parties.

Tarrant, who turned 30 yesterday, this week flagged his wish to return to Collingwood, which is keen to add another key defender to its arsenal.

Carlton door open for Tarrant

0

Carlton is poised to target out-of-contract Fremantle defender Chris Tarrant in next month’s exchange period.

The former Magpie has come to the end of a four-year-deal with Fremantle and has informed the club that he wants to be traded back to Melbourne.

Carlton coach Brett Ratten said Tarrant could bolster a backline that looked vulnerable at times this season.

“If Chris is coming home and wants to come home, then I think he would seem to be a fairly good fit for our club and where we’ve got that deficiency,” he told afl.com.au.

“What he’s done to go back from being a forward and play on talls and smalls, I think his record over the last two years as a backman has been outstanding.

“Someone that could play at both ends would be preferable but I think we just need another tall defender.”

Tarrant may return to Magpie nest

0

Departing Fremantle full-back Chris Tarrant says he would be prepared to rejoin Collingwood in the hope of finishing his career with a premiership.

Tarrant, who will turn 30 on Saturday, is understood to have told Fremantle last week of his plans to return to Victoria for family and business reasons.

Tarrant had kicked 299 goals from 161 games with the Magpies when he was traded to Fremantle at the end of 2006, but made a successful transition to the backline in his last two seasons in the west.

Confident he had as many as three years to offer at AFL level, he said he would be best suited to a club that needed a key defender but was also poised to challenge for a premiership.

Hawthorn has already expressed its interest in him.

“I’ve been chasing the premiership dream now for 13 years. It’s been a long time. I’m still really keen to get a flag. You basically almost go to a club that’s really in that premiership window,” he told The Footy Show on Thursday night.

David Mundy counts down to big call

0

In-demand Fremantle midfielder David Mundy is set to decide his future next week after travelling to Melbourne for the Brownlow on Monday.

Mundy is pondering three options, all of them lucrative – stay in Fremantle, accept the cashed-up Gold Coast’s offer, or return to Victoria.

He has just finished a two-year deal believed to be worth $550,000 a season, but Melbourne clubs with salary cap room are confident of winning his services.

A raft of Melbourne clubs have inquired about his services, but the Seymour boy is yet to sit down with suitors.

Essendon is leading the charge, but Richmond and Melbourne are believed to be among interested parties.

It is believed most Victorian clubs have been keen to find out what it would take to get the 25-year-old, who is one of Fremantle’s likely top Brownlow Medal pollers.

He conceded two years ago after re-signing at Fremantle the pull of Victoria was strong.
