Harvey wants answers over Eagles changes

0

Mark Harvey was again left talking about injured players following yesterday’s western derby loss to West Coast – only this time it wasn’t just his own team that concerned the Fremantle coach.

Harvey questioned the late withdrawal of Eagles midfielders Andrew Embley (hamstring) and Daniel Kerr (abductor), who were both scratched after picking up injuries during the warm-up.

While Harvey insisted the late changes were not responsible for his side’s 33-point defeat – “we probably don’t have enough class at the moment” – he did think the matter needed to be looked into.

“We’ll be seeking clarification on that (the loss of Embley and Kerr),” he said.

Roberton sweats on tribunal

0

Dylan Roberton’s bid for a quick return to the Fremantle team will depend on his fate at the WAFL Tribunal this week after he was reported for striking on Saturday.

Roberton was reported by umpire Stuart Parry late in East Perth’s 60-point victory over Peel at Bendigo Bank Stadium for what appeared to be a punch to Thunder utility Ash Thornton.

Roberton provided reasonable run from defence for East Perth in his first WAFL game of the season after playing the first six matches for the Dockers.

He was dropped to the Royals after gathering just one kick in five possessions as the sub against Richmond last week.

More pressure needed, says Mayne

0

Fremantle forward Chris Mayne says his side needs to focus on what made it a top-four contender early in the season and rediscover its defensive edge after back-to-back losses.

Fremantle lost its first Western Derby since round three in 2007 on Sunday, with the rejuvenated West Coast out-pressuring Mark Harvey’s side all over the ground to gain a 51-30 edge in inside 50s and win by 33 points.

Mayne, one of the competition’s best defensive forwards, said Fremantle needed to get back to the game style that had given it a 4-1 start to the season, starting against Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Sunday.

“It’s for us to keep building morale, keep getting around each other and focus on the stuff that we’ve been good at – our pressuring, our forward pressure and our contested ball and hard-ball gets,” Mayne said from Fremantle Oval on Monday.

“It’s unfortunate that we’ve been playing the way we have the last two weeks, but it’s something for us as a group to get back on track and bounce back.”

Mundy one of ‘the few’

0

Fremantle coach Mark Harvey says he is being served well by too few, and midfielder David Mundy clearly is one of them.

The clearance specialist was again among Fremantle’s standout players in Sunday’s Western Derby loss, but a lack of midfield depth is fast becoming an issue for the team as injuries start to take their toll.

Mundy, who had 28 possessions and booted a goal against West Coast, cut a frustrated figure in the rooms after the match as a list of usual suspects topped Fremantle’s best players list.

Second-year star Nat Fyfe (28 possessions and two goals) and Aaron Sandilands (45 hit-outs and five clearances) were the other main contributors for Fremantle, while captain Matthew Pavlich and reliable defender Luke McPharlin pulled their weight.

At the other end of the scale, six Fremantle players had 10 possessions or fewer as their team lost the contested possession count 161-140.

Freo lacking class: Harvey

0

Fremantle coach Mark Harvey says his side continues to be served by too few and is lacking class after suffering its first Western Derby loss in four years.

Harvey lost his first derby as coach on Sunday with his team struggling to cope with West Coast’s forward press, eventually going down by 33 points at Patersons Stadium.

It was Fremantle’s second straight loss after last week’s final quarter capitulation against Richmond and Harvey was again left to ponder a lack of depth, particularly in the midfield.

While David Mundy and Nat Fyfe continue to lead the way in the centre and Aaron Sandilands again won a mountain of hit-outs (45), injuries to key midfielders Michael Barlow (broken leg) and Anthony Morabito (knee) are starting to hurt the team.

“We appear to have not enough class at the moment in our side and we are putting ourselves under pressure with disposal,” Harvey said after the match.

Jack’s Back

0

Jack Anthony is set to make his Fremantle debut in Sunday’s Carlton Mid Derby at Patersons Stadium.

Freo senior coach Mark Harvey confirmed that the former Collingwood player would line up for his 44th AFL match.

Harvey said Anthony had ticked the boxes to earn his senior call up.

“His pressure up forward and his ability to kick goals at Subiaco has been significant,” Harvey said.

“Our expectations of Jack on Sunday will be measured by how hard he works when we haven’t got the ball.”

Anthony played three seasons for the Magpies from 2008-2010, kicking 80 goals before being picked up by Freo in the 2011 Pre-season Draft.

The 23-year-old has been playing for WAFL side Subiaco this season where he has booted 15 majors in his six appearances.

Anthony said knowing he was going to play AFL again reminded him of the feeling he got when he was selected for his AFL debut for Collingwood in 2008.

“It’s exciting,” he said.

An unbreakable Bond behind Freo’s revival

0

Despite a public persona akin to that of a secret agent, a one-time Fremantle discard has reinvented himself as a key plank in the club’s rise.

The name’s Bond. Chris Bond. One of the AFL’s true survivors.

Forced to leave Carlton in 1992 because of a lack of playing opportunity, traded by Richmond in 1997, sacked as Fremantle captain two years later and then overlooked for two senior coaching positions, Bond has never let disappointment determine his destiny.

Perth footy fans stuck with derby delay

0

It’s the most eagerly anticipated western derby for several years and expected to be a sell-out, but Channel Seven and its free-to-air television audience will still be robbed of watching the game live.

While pay-TV broadcaster Foxtel will show Sunday’s clash between the West Coast Eagles and Fremantle Dockers live from 2.40pm, free-to-air viewers will have to wait another 30 minutes to see any of the match on Channel Seven.

Both the Seven Network and the AFL confirmed yesterday that contractual arrangements meant there was no recourse for the free-to-air broadcaster to move to show the game live, despite locals being unable to get a ticket to the game.

Freo tourism push during Dockers games

0

Fremantle’s funky vibe will be advertised interstate during Fremantle Dockers games in a new marketing campaign for the port city.

Fremantle economic development and marketing manager Andrew Eastick said the overall cost of the campaign would be $140,000.

Of that, the City will pay just $40,000, with the rest of the bill being picked up by Experience Perth, Tourism WA and through in-kind sponsorship from the Fremantle Dockers and participating businesses.

Mr Eastick said it was a significant destination marketing campaign for the city, because it was important to promote interstate and would help to link a “greater awareness” of Fremantle.

“Television is a very effective medium for destination marketing campaigns if sufficient resources are available,” he said.

The campaign’s aim will be to attract more visitors to Fremantle, with a focus on getting heads on pillows in various local accommodation destinations.

Professional adults between 45 and 64 years old with no children from the upper socio-economic demographic are the main target.

The new advertisements will be televised throughout 2011 in Sydney and Melbourne the same week the Dockers play in the city, as well as through Channel 7’s Sunrise program.
