Harvey to Ratten: bring it on

0

Fremantle coach Mark Harvey says the Blues underestimated his side last time they met, and they risk doing the same in Friday night’s finals-shaping clash at Subiaco Oval.

Carlton coach Brett Ratten has questioned the wisdom of Fremantle resting seven key players last week, and he suggested Harvey’s men may not be able to “flick the switch” on their form this Friday.

Harvey defended the club’s tactic, which has split opinion across the footy world, and said Fremantle’s nine-point win over the Blues in round 13 was evidence Carlton had underestimated his side in the past.

“Perhaps he (Ratten) should pick our side?” Harvey said on Wednesday. “They underestimated us last time we played them and it looks like they’re doing that again.

“We beat them on the road at their stadium.

“If he wants to inflame the game, that’s what I say, bring it on.

Get on board Eagles fans: Harvey

0

Fremantle Dockers coach Mark Harvey has urged all WA football fans – including those of arch rivals West Coast – to get behind the team this Friday night.

The Dockers face off against Carlton under lights at Subiaco Oval and must win to grab a home final the following weekend.

The club rested eight key players from the weekend’s match with Hawthorn in Launceston, all of which are now in line to be recalled for the clash with the Blues, sparking an outcry over the Dockers’ selection tactics.

Speaking on 6PR last night, Fremantle coach Mark Harvey said all the questions surrounding the overhaul of his team for the Hawks game had shone the spotlight on Friday’s game – so much so that he has even called on the supporters of the bottom-placed Eagles to support their purple-clad foes.

Bookie wants AFL inquiry into Dockers’ thrashing

0

One of Australia’s biggest football bookmakers has demanded that the AFL inquire into Fremantle’s 116-point thrashing by Hawthon last Saturday after a fortune in winning bets were recorded across Australia.

Alan Eskander, the principal of the Betstar bookmaking firm, claimed yesterday that the AFL must never allow clubs to ”seemingly overnight” leave out the bulk of their team.

”Surely there must be an onus on those controlling the competition to make sure every team that takes the field is trying to win,” he said.

”We sat back and watched floods of money each day last week wanting to back Hawthorn, and if the average punter had known Fremantle were fielding a suburban side they would have supported them as well.”

Ratten questions Freo’s tactics

0

Carlton coach Brett Ratten has ramped up the pressure on Fremantle, describing their tactic to rest key players in round 21 as a “big risk”.

Sixth-placed Fremantle can guarantee a home final if they win Friday’s match against the eighth-ranked Blues, who could also host a playoff match if they win the Subiaco encounter.

Ratten says Fremantle’s decision to field a weakened team in last weekend’s 116-point loss to Hawthorn in Launceston could come back to haunt them.

“Players that have been out for four or five weeks, we know how good they can be on their day, but form is something you just can’t turn on,” Ratten said on Tuesday.

Hasleby sets sail for life after Dockers

0

Paul Hasleby is looking to a bright future focused on family after retiring from Fremantle, writes Joseph Sapienza.

As 29-year-old Paul Hasleby recounted his belief that he could return to AFL football after a devastating knee injury cut short his season in 2008, he thanked those loved ones who supported him and kept him on track to fulfil his goals.

“No doubt my girlfriend, Nicole,” he said gratefully, as an awkward silence descended on the press conference.

Then a faint murmur from his partner caught his ear.

“Fiancee? There you go, forgot about that,” he smiled, sending his teammates and club staff into fits of laughter.

“She’s been a tower of strength for me through a lot of tough times. It’s been a journey. You gotta realise that every player, they have people behind them that ride every bump along the way and she’s certainly done that, along with my family they’ve been a rock …”.

‘I’ll play Blues’: Aaron Sandilands

0

DOCKERS ruckman Aaron Sandilands has confirmed he’ll return from a foot injury against Carlton on Friday night.

The Dockers must win their Round 22 match to ensure they host an elimination final in the first week of the finals.

“After three weeks of raging speculation about my foot injury I can now confirm that I am ready to play again,” the towering ruckman wrote on website SportsNewsFirst.

“I am definitely going to resume in Friday night’s important clash with Carlton at Subiaco Oval and I have to admit I feel really fresh and raring to go.”

Sandilands has missed the past three games, including the thrashing at by Hawthorn on Saturday afternoon, when the Dockers rested several star players, including skipper Matthew Pavlich.

“If some of the other boys that had our Round 21 weekend away from the heavy action that AFL battle can present feel as fresh as I do, we will have a really healthy squad to take on the Blues in a big game for us,” Sandilands wrote.

“A couple of good running sessions last week and then no soreness in the foot afterwards was the first sign I was ready to resume.

“Now it will be back into full training this week and ready to go.”

B-mantle blunder or daring Docker design?

0

Just who will Carlton be playing on Friday night in its crucial round 22 clash with Fremantle? The Subiaco showdown pits the improving Blues against a team that could have as many as fourteen changes to its line-up.

There might not be much point in Carlton doing a video review of the dismal Docker loss to the Hawks in Launceston – most of that team is unlikely to be playing this week.

The seven players controversially rested from Fremantle’s 116-point loss in round 21 will return, but other inclusions should include forwards Chris Mayne (suspension) and Hayden Ballantyne (foot), whilst key big man Aaron Sandilands (foot) should also be unleashed after missing three matches.

Mark Harvey hits AFL image

0

This weekend at least two AFL coaches went down experimental paths. One appeared to work well; the other backfired embarrassingly.

Mark Thompson turned the handball-happy Cats into the kick-conscious Cats on Friday night, seemingly a clear change of direction designed for the next time they meet Collingwood.

Mark Harvey went even further, opting to rest eight battle-weary Freo stars with soreness, leading to a farcical situation against Hawthorn in Tasmania, and a serious image problem for the AFL.

Hasleby to retire

1

Fremantle midfielder Paul Hasleby has announced his retirement as an AFL player.

A veteran of 207 games with Fremantle, Hasleby confirmed to club officials earlier today that he would not be seeking to renew his contract in 2011.

Depending on fitness, the 29-year-old, who was a late withdrawal from last Saturday’s game due to swelling in his knee, will be available for selection against Carlton on Friday night at Subiaco Oval.

In round 1 of 2000, the then 18-year-old announced his arrival on the AFL scene with a record 30-possession effort on debut against Geelong at Subiaco Oval.

Eleven seasons after being taken by Fremantle as a priority selection in the 1999 AFL National Draft, he played his 200th game for the club in round 13 this year against Carlton at Etihad Stadium.

His decorated career includes the AFL Rising Star award in 2000, All Australian and International Rules selection in 2003 and four Ross Glendinning medals for best-on-ground in Carlton Mid Derbies.
