0

The Fremantle Football Club today suspended Michael Johnson from AFL action for six weeks and imposed a $5000 fine under a range of sanctions handed down by the club after he was charged yesterday by police with possessing cocaine.

The club imposed sanctions are as follows:

• Suspension from training with the club until 31 May.
• From 31 May, Johnson will be able to train with the club but will not be available for selection at AFL or WAFL level until 21 June. He will be available for WAFL selection from this date, being WAFL Round 14.
• Not available for AFL selection for the club for a total of six weeks (being five AFL matches and the AFL bye), making Johnson available for selection for AFL Round 14 being 3 July.
• Stood down from the club’s Leadership Group for the 2010 season.
• Fine of $5000, being the maximum allowable under the AFL’s player code of conduct.
• Attendance at appropriate drug counselling sessions as determined by the AFL’s Medical Officers.

Michael Johnson stood down

0

Fremantle player Michael Johnson has been stood down by the club from all club activities, including training and playing at all levels.

Chief executive officer Steve Rosich said today that the decision to stand the player down until further notice was made after Johnson was questioned by police in the early hours of Sunday morning on a drug related matter.

At the time, police advised Johnson that he would be charged by summons at a later date.

Rosich said that the club was yet to a reach a decision on what club sanctions would be imposed on Johnson.

“In accordance with the protocols we have in place, we are still in the process of gathering all relevant information and doing so in a timely and appropriate manner,” he said.

“We are very disappointed that Michael placed himself in a situation that allowed these circumstances to arise.

“Due to the serious nature of the matter and an impending police charge, the club believes that standing Michael down was the appropriate course of action to take at this stage.

Police are investigating a drug-related matter involving Fremantle Docker Michael Johnson.

“WA Police are investigating a drug-related matter on the weekend involving a current AFL player, no charges have been laid at this stage and no further details are available for release,” police said in a statement.

Police also said they would not comment further until the investigation was complete.

In a statement, Fremantle chief executive Steve Rosich said the club was aware of the matter.

“We are treating it very seriously,” Mr Rosich said. “We are currently gathering all relevant information and will make further comment when we are in a position to do so.

“There will be no comment from the club until that time.”

We can cover key losses: Ibbotson

0

MIDFIELDER Garrick Ibbotson is confident Fremantle can cover for the loss of up to three key players this week when the third-placed side travels to face the Sydney Swans at the SCG.

Fremantle will be without in-form key defender Luke McPharlin, who suffered a medial ligament injury against Collingwood last Friday night, while David Mundy (knee) and Greg Broughton (foot) are in doubt.

Ibbotson said Antoni Grover, who is returning from injury though the WAFL, was the perfect replacement for McPharlin, while the club now had the depth to cover the other losses.

“Antoni Grover’s playing again and he’s been playing well in the WAFL,” Ibbotson said from Fremantle Oval on Monday.

“He’s probably the ideal person to come straight back in for Luke McPharlin.

“Obviously David Mundy’s an important player to us, and he’s part of the leadership group. Outside of him playing good footy, he’s good to have on the field as far as his experience goes.

The Dockers fan I wish was here

0

WITH Fremantle sitting second on the AFL ladder, I believe it’s only fitting that this column be dedicated to Matt Price.

A wonderful writer and wonderful bloke, Matt is best remembered for his clever and often humorous coverage of federal politics for The Australian.

He was also such a strong Fremantle supporter he wrote a book about the club and had it launched by then prime minister John Howard, resplendent in a Fremantle scarf.

I had the privilege of getting to know Matt during the decade he ghosted my column and our weekly chats during the footy season were a real pleasure.

Tragically, Matt died 2 1/2 years ago from brain tumours at the age of 46. I remember the love he felt for his wife, Sue, and their three children and the passion with which he followed the Dockers.

Matt would be overjoyed that seven games into the season, Fremantle has lost just once and has the rare privilege of hosting a top-of-the-table match against Collingwood at Subiaco tonight.

The Running Man

0

While his contemporaries’ careers have stumbled, Stephen Hill’s star continues to rise.

YOU could be forgiven for thinking there’s a curse attached to the AFL’s Rising Star award.

Fremantle midfielder Rhys Palmer took out the gong for 2008 and played just five games last year before a serious knee injury required a reconstruction.

Now the crop of 2009 is feeling the pinch. Runner-up in last year’s award, Adelaide’s Andy Otten, damaged a knee pre-season and is out until 2011. Third-placed Tayte Pears, from Essendon, has a fractured forearm and is out until midseason. Same for equal fourth-placed Callan Ward from the Western Bulldogs, who has osteitis pubis. And the Crows’ Patrick Dangerfield, who came fifth, has missed several weeks with a broken hand. And winner Daniel Rich hasn’t matched the stellar heights of last year.

Which leaves just one of the top half-dozen. That’s Stephen Hill, of Fremantle. And the contrast with his peers is stark. Firstly, Hill is fit. Secondly, he’s in very, very good form.

Fremantle’s dramatic improvement is one of the emerging storylines of 2010. But it’s also overshadowed another great yarn. And that’s Hill’s swift climb from elite youngster to elite. If Hill’s debut season was impressive, his follow-up is proving much better, a point made emphatically in the Dockers’ first win at the Gabba last Saturday night, when Hill was a clear best on ground with 32 disposals.

Flint-hard Dockers the image of their coach

0

Essendon great Matthew Lloyd says the new-look Fremantle Dockers, complete with their hardened edge and defensive commitment, are now playing in the image of their coach, Mark Harvey.

And Lloyd should know, for Harvey was his mentor during their long association at Windy Hill.

That partnership developed when a teenage Lloyd joined the Bombers in 1995 just as Harvey’s career, firstly as a classy half-forward and later as an undersized but tough-as-teak centre half-back, was coming to an end.

It continued when Harvey became an assistant under the legendary Kevin Sheedy and helped teach Lloyd how to train properly and handle the on-field rigors of playing at the sport’s top level.
