Nathan Fyfe – AFL Rising Star Round 9

0

FREMANTLE youngster Nathan Fyfe is this week’s nomination for the NAB AFL Rising Star.

The exciting mid-sized forward earned the nomination for gathering 23 disposals in Fremantle’s win over the Sydney Swans on Saturday.

The 18-year-old admits he was surprised that he has slotted in to the senior team so early in his career and says he has been overwhelmed with how approachable he has found his new teammates.

“I look up to the leaders of the club – Matthew Pavlich and Aaron Sandilands but for me Paul Duffield and Ryan Murphy have been great mentors and easy to approach guys who I can go and talk to about any issues on field or off field and they’ve been a big help,” he said.

The home-grown Sandgroper was drafted by Fremantle with pick 20 in the 2009 NAB AFL Draft after impressive performances for Claremont Colts and Western Australia’s State Under 18s side. The highlight of his carnival came when he booted four goals against a powerful Vic Metro side.

Johnson gets $500 fine

FREMANTLE’S Michael Johnson has been fined $500 in Perth Magistrates’ Court after he pleaded guilty on Tuesday to possessing cocaine.

Johnson was fined $5000 by the club last week, suspended until after the mid-season break and cannot train with the side until the end of May.

Johnson was charged with possessing 0.15 grams of cocaine after he was questioned by police in the early hours of Sunday, May 16.

At the time of the initial sanctions, Fremantle chief executive officer Steve Rosich promised that the club-imposed penalties would stand regardless of the outcome of the police charge, and he confirmed on Tuesday that that was the case, and that the club would not add to them.

“While we will ensure that Michael’s ongoing welfare is paramount, we are extremely disappointed that, while under the influence of alcohol, he engaged in public conduct that has resulted in a drug-related police charge,” Rosich last week.

Pavlich takes the lead in AFLCA award voting

0

A PERFECT 10 for Matthew Pavlich has seen him jump ahead of teammate Aaron Sandilands to be the outright leader of the AFLCA champion player of the year award.

The Fremantle captain was awarded maximum votes from coaches Mark Harvey and Paul Roos for his three-goal effort in Saturday’s win over the Sydney Swans.

Sandilands was leading by six votes but is now in second place after polling just three votes for his efforts against the Swans.

Pavlich was one of six players to receive maximum votes on the weekend. Bulldog Adam Cooney, Essendon’s David Hille, Saint Lenny Hayes, Hawk Lance Franklin and Crow Richard Douglas also scored perfect 10s.

Luke Hodge made ground on Sandilands, polling eight votes in Hawthorn’s win over Carlton to sit on the podium in third place, just eight behind the 211cm ruckman.

Johnson’s drug furore disappoints Harvey

0

Fremantle coach Mark Harvey is struggling to understand Michael Johnson’s dabble with cocaine in the early hours of Sunday morning, but says his suspension has had no affect on the team’s preparation to take on Sydney this weekend.

The Dockers will fly out to the Harbour City today without Johnson, who was yesterday suspended for six weeks, and five games, following the charge by WA Police earlier this week.

Speaking on radio 6PR this morning, Harvey said he had been deeply disappointed by Johnson’s actions.

“I am more disappointed (than let down), you never really understand what players can go through and how they can be misled about life,” Harvey said.

Johnson hopes to emerge a better person

0

SUSPENDED Fremantle player Michael Johnson says he wants to become a better person, a better player and a better father to his two young children when he returns from a club-imposed six-week ban.

Johnson, who was charged by WA police on Tuesday with possessing cocaine, has been suspended from training with his teammates until May 31 and will not be available for AFL selection until round 14.

He has been fined a maximum $5000 by the club and broke his silence on Wednesday reading a prepared statement at Fremantle Oval.

“I would like to apologise to the AFL, the AFL Players Association, the Fremantle footy club, my teammates, Fremantle supporters, my family and friends,” Johnson said.

“I am very disappointed in my actions on the weekend and I am working through it with my legal team and the club.
