Michael Johnson inks new chapter with Fremantle Dockers

0

Rebuilt and rejuvenated in mind and body, Michael Johnson is a man on a mission and the Fremantle defender is doing it for more than just his club.

The 27-year-old says he’s playing for himself, his people and, most of all, for his family. It’s a family of five now after he and partner Dayna brought home their third child, a daughter Nevaya, this week.

“It’s been fantastic to have the little one at home; the other two kids love her so it’s been great at home so far,” he said. “I’ve had two already, so I’m prepared for the sleepless nights. I’ll tweak a couple of things during the week and the club is very supportive of that so I can help out the missus and the kids.

Retired St Kilda midfielder Steve Baker says Fremantle is on the road to success

0

One of the key cogs in Ross Lyon’s St Kilda machine has urged Fremantle fans to be patient and said the Dockers were capable of being a power once the game plan “clicked”.

Heading into today’s Derby, which could shape Fremantle’s season, retired Saint Steve Baker, whose 203-game career at St Kilda took in Lyon’s five years at the helm, threw his support behind the coach’s defensive strategy, but admitted there were growing pains in its infancy.

“Our brand of football was quick and direct under Thommo (former coach Grant Thomas),” Baker said.

“To adapt the more defensive mindset in that first year, there was a bit of confusion between the players and it took us a long time to grasp the concept of the zone, foremost.

Jealousy’s a curse you know, Woosha

0

By Simon White

It was with some interest that I read on the weekend how John Worsfold thought critics of his team might have been jealous.

“Even the fever pitch that the high-tackling issue got to to last week – was that a bit because it was West Coast or would it have been that big if it was any other club?” Woosha was quoted as saying.

Off the top of my head I can think of three clubs who could raise an issue about the Eagles without being accused of jealousy.

Fremantle coach Ross Lyon to wield axe ahead of West Coast clash

0

Fremantle coach Ross Lyon is set to swing the axe in the wake of last week’s 56-point AFL loss to Hawthorn.

The Dockers were annihilated 48-24 in the clearances against the Hawks, and face an even sterner task this Sunday when they take on ladder-leading West Coast at Patersons Stadium.

Although Lyon said the selection committee would have to be careful not to “throw the baby out with the bath water” on the back of just one heavy loss, he agreed changes were necessary to make a statement.

Every week, every quarter

David Mundy says if Fremantle fails to bring the effort required each week, in each quarter, it will face similar results to the 56-point hiding in Launceston against Hawthorn last Saturday.

The 2010 Doig Medallist said, after a very quiet plane trip home, the team hoped the bad showing against the Hawks was just an aberration.

“Everyone was cut quite deeply,” he said.

“There’s going to be an extensive review and we’ll learn a lot out of the game.

“Hopefully, most of all, we’ll learn not to replicate it.”

Senior coach Ross Lyon was scathing in his analysis of Fremantle’s midfield, which was comprehensively beaten in Launceston.

Mundy said no fingers could be pointed at individuals and that the blame had to be placed on the group as a collective.

Western derby could decide Dockers’ season

0

I’m hoping like hell that Fremantle beat West Coast on Sunday and St Kilda roll the Swans at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night.

But while football will be the winner, I won’t be tipping either of those sides to win, though.

If the Eagles clip the Dockers and Sydney get over St Kilda, who have been asked to handle two consecutive six-day travelling breaks, then we may well have settled a top eight by the end of round nine.

And that is not good for the competition. That’s too much of a gulf between the haves and the have-nots.

Fremantle Dockers seek midfield improvement in Western Derby

0

Fremantle on-baller David Mundy and his fellow midfielders have accepted responsibility for their team’s embarrassing 56-point loss to Hawthorn.

Dockers coach Ross Lyon was highly critical of his midfield group after Saturday’s one-sided contest in Launceston, with the Hawks dominating the clearances 48-24.

Lyon’s comments were echoed by former club champion Mundy, who labelled the performance unacceptable and urged his teammates to lift ahead of Sunday’s crucial Western Derby clash at Patersons Stadium.

Dugout drama between coach and captain in Fremantle Dockers Tassie meltdown

Dockers skipper Matthew Pavlich has refused to “jump at shadows” after yesterday’s 56-point defeat to Hawthorn at Aurora Stadium, defending the team’s defensive gameplan and instead saying a lack of effort let the side down.

Pavlich defended the team’s defensive game plan, instead saying a lack of effort let the side down.

The defensive mindset under new coach Ross Lyon led the port club to having the tightest defence in the league before yesterday, but it unravelled under the contested pressure of Hawthorn.

Late bids for unsigned Ryder

0

By SportsNewsFirst

Gold Coast and Fremantle could make late bids to win the playing services of Essendon big man Paddy Ryder.

Gold Coast is believed to have sights on securing a gun power forward while Fremantle is understood to have Ryder as a fall-back option if the Dockers fail to win the race to sign Collingwood colossus Travis Cloke.

Dockers management has made clear intentions to lure a power forward since a desperate bid to win former Brisbane big man Mitch Clark failed at the last minute during controversial trade dealing last October.
