Freo unearth another secret gem

0

Emerging Sydney Uni colt, Craig Moller, performed exceptionally well for the NSW/ACT Rams in the recent U16 National Championships.

The team finished third in the Division Two section of the competition, accounting for the Northern Territory and a World XVI while going down to Queensland in the first game. Tasmania were the eventual champions.

Moller finished the series as NSW/ACT’s most valuable player with consistent efforts across all three games, playing in the ruck and across the forward line.

He is now focusing on returning to club action for Sydney University and pushing his case for GWS selection in the latter part of the year.

Moller is a product of Cronulla Junior Football Club and transferred to Sydney University this season after his family recently moved into the area. He attends SUANFC pathway school Sydney Boys HS and is on scholarship with the Fremantle Dockers.

Well done Craig!

Pav tells fans forget wooden spoons

0

Matthew Pavlich has urged Fremantle fans not to taunt West Coast with wooden spoons at Sunday’s western derby, claiming such a ploy would be against his club’s character.

With the Eagles anchored to the bottom of the ladder, there is a groundswell of support encouraging fans to bring the cooking utensils to Subiaco Oval.

The unofficial supporters’ website, Dockerland, started the push last month.

But Pavlich, who demanded his teammates move on quickly from yesterday’s debacle against the Western Bulldogs, said the sledging strategy was ill-conceived.

“I don’t think that’s how our supporters act and I don’t think that’s in their values,” the captain said.

“They want to see us win, but win for the right reasons. Our supporters are hopefully a bit smarter than that.”

Coach Mark Harvey also gave the issue little credence when he said: “Totally discount Twitter and any of those things that people may want to say who have a hidden identity.

“Disregard it. That would be the last thing on our minds, I would have thought. We worry about our own backyard.”

Fremantle can rediscover spark: Suban

0

DEFENDER Nick Suban is adamant Fremantle can rediscover some spark in the western derby against the Eagles at Subiaco next Sunday.

Fremantle’s young players looked flat and tired during their round 17 loss to the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium.

But Suban said footy watchers should not write off the team because of one bad performance.

“We were setting ourselves to win and it’s obviously very disappointing we didn’t produce,” Suban said.

“We tried hard but our skills let us down and our tackling pressure wasn’t there.”

Suban acknowledged that the cross-town clash with the Eagles will provide plenty of motivation.

“We’re still feeling pretty good,” he said. “The side’s excited just to be playing footy and we’re really excited about getting out there next week against West Coast and trying to get a win for this club.

“It’s obviously a great rivalry with West Coast.

“It’s going to be a great game. There’ll be a big crowd there, so it’s exciting.”

Inexperience cost us: Harvey

0

FREMANTLE coach Mark Harvey says his team’s inexperience was a major factor in its thumping loss to the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

A rash of injuries meant Fremantle fielded 11 first or second-year players against the Dogs.

“Physically, we weren’t at our best,” Harvey said after the game. “We’ve got a lot of immaturity in our side at the moment.

“That’s not an excuse for being beaten, as we got beaten in all facets, from stoppages through to the way we were tackled and our lack of tackling at times.

“We’ve got a significant injury toll at the moment, but we’re fielding a team and it was probably the first time all year we’ve been smashed like that.

“What you want to look at now is how they respond and what they do about it.”

The 82-point loss saw Fremantle fall to fifth on the ladder, while the Bulldogs replaced them in the top four.

“We’ve never said we’re a top-four side,” Harvey added.

Stephen Hill ushers in new era

0

A PUB debate was raging this week: who was the best midfielder of the past decade, Chris Judd or Gary Ablett?

Given the absence of many other obvious candidates worthy of the mantle, I elected not to be drawn on an almost impossible issue.

Except to say that Ablett only became an elite midfielder in the latter half of the decade, and that perhaps Simon Black, Nathan Buckley, Michael Voss, Adam Goodes and Ben Cousins should be added to the discussion.

Last week, I witnessed an incredible man-on-man duel that had me thinking along similar lines, albeit with an eye to the future.

If you haven’t got Fox Sports and live outside WA you will have seen very little of one of the combatants, Fremantle’s Stephen Hill.

Hill was a controversial draft pick when he was taken at No. 3, ahead of a fellow West Australian who would go on to win the Rising Star, Brisbane Lion Daniel Rich (No. 7).

Fremantle and its recruiting manager were savaged for the first half of last season for not taking Rich, an instant star performer from Round 1.

As Hill began to find his feet midway through the year, critics lost their voice.

Now they appear to have lost their memory.

Crichton to debut

0

First-year Fremantle player Jesse Crichton will make his AFL debut in Sunday’s clash with the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium.

The 19-year-old Tasmanian recruit has been named in Freo’s final 22, along with Antoni Grover, Nick Suban and Clancee Pearce.

The quartet replaces Kepler Bradley (knee), Ryan Crowley (knee), Alex Silvagni (groin) and Paul Hasleby (general soreness).

Crichton, an AIS AFL Academy graduate, was selected by Fremantle with pick 48 in the 2009 NAB AFL Draft after representing Tasmania at the Under-18 Championships.

He has been playing for WAFL side Peel Thunder in 2010, mainly as a midfielder.

Senior coach Mark Harvey said Crichton’s promotion has been well-earned.

Harvey wants protection for Sandilands

0

FREMANTLE is compiling a detailed submission for the AFL umpiring department in an effort to see All-Australian ruckman Aaron Sandilands given more protection at stoppages.

Coach Mark Harvey said the club had huge concerns about Sandilands’ treatment at boundary throw-ins and ball-ups, with opposition ruckmen “wrestling” the 211cm star well before play restarts.

Harvey joked that cage fighter Brock Lesnar was being approached to help Sandilands deal with opposition tactics, but he was serious about taking the club’s concerns to AFL director of umpiring Jeff Gieschen.

“There’s a huge concern about it; effectively before the ball gets either thrown in, or whether it’s a ball-up, they’re wrestling Aaron,” Harvey said from the WACA ground on Wednesday.

“We are compiling a lot of evidence and data about it. They will get that very soon.
