0

Matthew Pavlich and Luke McPharlin have been recognised for their outstanding seasons by being named in the 40-man squad in contention for selection for the 2012 Four’N Twenty AFL All Australian Team.

Fremantle captain Pavlich, with six previous All Australian selections, is the most decorated player in the squad, in which a total of 24 members have never previously been named as an All Australian, including McPharlin.

The All Australian Selection panel is Andrew Demetriou (chairman), Adrian Anderson, Kevin Bartlett, Luke Darcy, Danny Frawley, Gerard Healy, Glen Jakovich and Mark Ricciuto.

“Selection in the Four’N Twenty All Australian team is recognition for a tremendous year of football, as the best player in your position across the entire competition,” AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou said.

Tom set to realise a family dream

0

It’s fitting that tomorrow night at Patersons Stadium, on the eve of Father’s Day, Tom Sheridan will finally realise a dream that has been on hold in his family for 35 years.

In 1977, Tom’s dad Bryan was a promising teenager trying to break into Essendon’s VFL side via the reserves.

But on a fateful Brownlow Medal night that year, his dream was cruelly shattered when he was a passenger in a car that crashed into a light pole.

Bryan Sheridan’s injuries meant he had to give up footy or risk being crippled later in life.

“He wasn’t able to pursue his dream of playing footy and he never played a senior game,” Tom said.

“It’s always been in the back of my head.”

After finding out he’d be running out with Fremantle to play Melbourne on Saturday, the first person Tom called was his dad.

“He’s pretty proud that I’m going to achieve that this weekend,” Tom said.

From other guy to Son Son of a gun

It’s Sunday night in the Virgin lounge at Melbourne airport.

Fremantle has just thrashed North Melbourne to qualify for the finals and most of the victorious players are hanging together in groups.

One player, however, has wandered off on his own to the other end of the lounge, where he is engaged in a conversation with an Adelaide Crows supporter. Seeing a racehorse screensaver on his fellow traveller’s laptop, the player asks whether his new acquaintance is involved in the racing industry and, when the answer comes back “yes”, is eager to ask about life in and around the sport of kings.

Fremantle Dockers coach Ross Lyon defends procedures for head injuries

0

Ross Lyon has defended Fremantle’s management of Kepler Bradley and Adam McPhee after the pair received heavy head knocks during last Sunday’s win over North Melbourne.

Bradley and McPhee both returned to the field after being assessed by club doctors following nasty collisions in the first and third quarters respectively.

The Dockers made the decision to substitute Bradley out of the game in the second quarter after he copped another series of hard blows and later vomited.

Chasing Pav

0

Fremantle’s Matthew Pavlich remains a slender Coleman Medal favourite, despite doubts over his fitness ahead of this week’s final round clash with Melbourne.

Pavlich was a late withdrawal from Sunday’s 53-point win over North Melbourne, missing the chance to add to his tally of 60 goals.

Tiger Jack Riewoldt’s three goals against Essendon on Friday night moved him to within one of the Fremantle skipper, and Tom Hawkins’ four for Geelong against the Western Bulldogs took him to 58.

After the win, Fremantle coach Ross Lyon said he aimed to have Pavlich back to face the Demons, but couldn’t give a guarantee.

TAB Sportsbet has Pavlich a $2.50 chance to claim the goalkicking crown, from Riewoldt ($3) and Hawkins ($3.50).

Lance Franklin and Drew Petrie, both with 55 goals, are seen as longshots at $15.

Freo pushes to keep Fremantle Dockers at the port

0

The City of Fremantle has unveiled lavish plans for a multi-million-dollar revamp of Fremantle Oval in an effort to persuade the Fremantle Dockers to stay put at the venue.

The council showcased its future plans for Fremantle Oval this afternoon.

It hopes the plans will encourage the Dockers to stay in Fremantle, following confirmation the City of Cockburn is attempting to lure them with a brand new training facility.

Port pushes to keep Dockers

Wind turbines and a solar farm form part of a $100 million pitch by the Fremantle City Council to keep the Fremantle Dockers at historic Fremantle Oval.

Fremantle mayor Dr Brad Pettitt has promised to extend the Port’s famous cappuccino strip to link it with the ground and said the council had already committed $2 million to offsetting the capital cost of the project in a bid to stave off an attractive bid by Cockburn to lure the Dockers to the Cockburn Central West site as a venue for a new community shared state of the art training facility.

Dr Pettitt confirmed the overall cost of the council’s concept plan for fremantle Oval would climb towards $100 million but could not give specific breakdowns on the cost of various aspects of the plan, or the cost to the Dockers.

Patersons puzzle

Chief executive Andrew Demetriou says the AFL will work around a Patersons Stadium fixture clash that could force West Coast or Fremantle to travel on a six-day break during the finals.

A rugby union international between the Wallabies and the Springboks has been booked at Patersons Stadium on Saturday, September 8, complicating the first two weeks of the AFL finals series.

There is a strong chance West Coast will meet Fremantle in a week one elimination final, which would need to be played on a Friday night or Sunday afternoon because of the rugby clash.

For the last two seasons, the Friday night slot has been used to open September with a qualifying final clash between top four teams.

If a derby final eventuated and was played on Sunday afternoon, it is likely the winner would have to travel in week two of the finals with a six-day preparation.

Midfield good but still not at peak says Mundy

0

David Mundy agrees Fremantle’s midfield has picked up considerably since its early season struggles but doesn’t believe it has reached peak form yet.

The 2010 Doig Medallist had 27 possessions to be among his side’s best in the win over North Melbourne on Sunday and has been in very good touch recently.

Stephen Hill, Clancee Pearce and Michael Barlow had 28 possessions each, while Nat Fyfe (25) and Matt de Boer (23) also performed well against the Kangaroos.

“We’re definitely going better,” Mundy said.

“I’m not sure about peak form.

“A lot of the boys are running in and finding a bit of the footy.

“Stephen Hill and Fyfe, and even the guys like Tendai Mzungu and Clancee Pearce are getting a bit of the footy.”

Mundy said Aaron Sandilands’ dominant 49-hitout effort against North helped the midfielders beat their opponents.

Freo makes Melbourne media take notice

0

In the wash-up that is the Monday morning after a round of footy, the Fremantle Dockers rarely get much of a run in the Melbourne-based papers.

But yesterday’s statement win over North Melbourne has made a few prominent journos take notice.

Martin Blake from The Age writes that Freo was “manic in its attack on the football under Ross Lyon’s coaching”.

“The defensive Dockers v the offensive Kangas ended up being a 53-point hiding, with the Dockers kicking nine goals in the final quarter. All this with their best forward, skipper, Matthew Pavlich, in the grandstand,” writes Mark Robinson from the Herald Sun.

Robinson went on to credit the team for successfully adopting Lyon’s defensive attitude and game style, while also managing to become a potent offensive threat.

“The Docker Stranglers are feasting on the ineptitude of the opposition to deal with their pressure and all-ground defence.”
