Duffield and Mayne extend contracts

0

Paul Duffield and Chris Mayne have agreed to contract extensions with the Fremantle Dockers.

Duffield has committed to the club through to the end of season 2014, while Mayne’s two-year extension will see him at the Fremantle Dockers until the end of 2013.

Both players are members of Fremantle’s 2011 leadership group, and General manager of player management Brad Lloyd said it was exciting to have them re-sign.

“We are delighted to have Paul and Chris commit to the club because they are both young leaders and very important players at this football club,” Lloyd said.

Duffield had a solid 2010 season playing a half-back/ midfield role and was the only Freo player to play all 22 regular games and two finals.

Mayne enters his fourth season of AFL football in season 2011, with his pressure skills inside the attacking half a highlight of his game. In 2010, he managed to kick 16 goals from his 14 games.

The durable full-back has played 181 games since his debut against Sydney colossus Tony Lockett at the WACA Ground back in 1999.

Grover would join reigning Dockers games record-holder Shane Parker (238), champion captain Matthew Pavlich (236), centreliner Shaun McManus (228) and recently retired follower Paul Hasleby on 208 games over the double-century mark.

Van Berlo upgraded

0

Rookie Fremantle defender Jay van Berlo will be rewarded for a breakthrough AFL season with elevation to the club’s senior list despite missing this year’s finals campaign.

Van Berlo, who turns 22 on Saturday, was consistent in defence this season, playing 18 matches, acting largely as a shut-down specialist.

He was dropped for the club’s two finals despite collecting a serviceable 17 disposals in the round 22 victory over Carlton – a result that guaranteed Fremantle a home final against Hawthorn.

Dockers football operations general manager Chris Bond admitted at the time that it had been a tough selection call to drop van Berlo, who made way for the incoming Jesse Crichton, Ryan Crowley and fellow defender Alex Silvagni.

Fremantle Captain Matthew Pavlich will be a Docker for life after agreeing to terms today that will see him remain at the club until the end of season 2014.

The four-year deal will see the 28-year-old qualify for veteran status in 2012.

Originally drafted from South Australian club Woodville-West Torrens in 1999 (No. 4 overall), Pavlich has become one of the game’s most outstanding players.

He has been Fremantle’s captain since 2007 after taking over from Peter Bell.

Since making his debut in round 5, 2000 against Melbourne at the WACA, he has gone on to win five Doig Medals as Fremantle’s best and fairest player (2002, 2005-2008).
Pavlich has also been selected in the AFL All-Australian team on six occasions (2002, 2003, 2005-2008).

This season, he topped the club’s goal kicking list for a seventh time and he is the all-time leading goal kicker at Fremantle.

Pavlich is only three games away from equalling Shane Parker’s club record of 238 games.

The legendary Sheedy will launch the AFL’s historic step into the western suburbs of Sydney in 2012 with the league’s newest team and has not ruled out recruiting experience players like Bradley for initial difficult steps into the national competition.

Contract extension for Mark Harvey

0

The Fremantle Football Club has extended senior coach Mark Harvey’s contract through to the end of 2012.

Fremantle chief executive officer Steve Rosich said today that the contract extension was a positive reflection of Harvey’s continued development as a senior coach, which has seen him coach 64 AFL games to date.

Harvey’s initial three-year contract as Fremantle’s senior coach commenced in 2008 and followed his appointment as an assistant coach at the club in 2006, including seven games as a caretaker coach in late 2007 after the resignation of his predecessor Chris Connolly.

A full-time assistant coach at Essendon for the previous eight years, Harvey had and an outstanding playing career with the Bombers that included 206 games and three AFL premierships.

“In the pre-season, the club, Mark and his management (ESP’s Dan Richardson) agreed to a timetable and a process to explore a contract extension beyond Mark’s initial contract to the end of 2010,” Rosich said.
