Ross Lyon has stayed true to his word from Wednesday’s Carlton Mid Derby media conference that Freo would not be making many changes – there’s been just the one.Key defender Zac Dawson returns to the team at the expense of promising South Australian recruit Cameron Sutcliffe.

The emergencies were Zac Clarke, who is on stand-by should Jon Griffin not come up, Josh Mellington and Sutcliffe.

Dawson returned to action via the WAFL last weekend after missing six games.

While he only had seven disposals, assistant and senior development coach Simon Lloyd said the club was pleased with Dawson’s defensive efforts.

“We were really happy with Zac’s game in regards to his positioning and his ability to nullify opponents,” Lloyd said on WAFL Watch.

“He was also creative in counter attacks by spoiling the ball to ground.”

Lloyd said Dawson didn’t appear to show any ill-effects of being on the sidelines for so long.

“He was still running really late into the game, which shows that in his first game back after six weeks out, his conditioning is good.”

Sutcliffe has played in four winning sides so far in his career, the past three as a sub, while Mellington kicked four goals in the WAFL in his fourth game back from a long-term hamstring injury.
