Senior coach Ross Lyon says the form of Freo’s key defenders and team balance have been factors keeping Alex Silvagni out of the side this season.

The defender has lined up just once for Freo in 2012, and Lyon indicated that probably wouldn’t change if Luke McPharlin and Zac Dawson continued to perform well.

“Alex rehabilitated nearly all pre-season,” Lyon said on 6PR on Monday night.

“Zac and Luke didn’t miss a beat.

“What happens is, it’s first in, best dressed, and if they’re holding their form, they’ve got their noses in front at the minute.

“I’m sure Alex’s turn will come, but that’s just the way it sits at the minute.”

Lyon said tagger Ryan Crowley could be sent to a number of in-form Richmond midfielders at the MCG this Saturday.

Tiger’s Trent Cotchin, Dustin Martin, Brett Delidio and Nathan Foley have all been getting their hands on the ball with regularity of late.

“Ryan could throw a dart at the wall and pick,” Lyon said.

The coach also assured Freo fans that the club was headed in the right direction.

“We’re not rebuilding, we’re continuing to build on the rebuild,” he said.
