The jewel in the crown of Fremantle’s midfield has been put back in place following champion on-baller David Mundy’s inclusion for Saturday’s clash against the Brisbane Lions at Patersons Stadium. The 2010 Doig Medallist has not played a game this season, but such is his quality and importance to the team, Fremantle has chosen to throw him in against the Lions.

Jack Anthony was the player to make way, while Alex Silvagni, Jay van Berlo and Dylan Roberton were named as emergencies.

Brisbane possesses a talented young midfield group, including the likes of Jack Redden, Tom Rockliff and Daniel Rich, although the Lions will miss the experience of Simon Black who is out with a hand injury.

Assistant coach Michael Prior said Mundy’s return will give Freo a huge boost in the midfield battle.

“David’s been champing at the bit to go,” Prior said.

“We’re confident that he’s fit, so to have him come into the side, it’s another name that the opposition has to worry about.”

Mundy has already stated confidence in his ability to run out a full game, but Prior said the coaching staff hadn’t decided if he would be used as a sub or not on Saturday.

“We’re confident going in that he’s at that fitness level where he could perform for more than just two or three quarters, but that’s yet to be decided,” he said.

Prior added that Michael Barlow was likely to start on the field and play a full game this week.

“Mick’s had his two weeks in the green bib and he’s shown the impact that he’s had on the game when he’s come in,” he said.

“We’re really confident that he can play a full game this week.”

Fremantle has won nine out of 14 matches when both Mundy and Barlow play in the same team, a statistic Prior said indicated the importance of quality players being fit and available.

“I think we are building on that and it’s not only those two, you can add Ballantyne going into the middle and we’ve got (Nat) Fyfe and (Stephen) Hill as well,” he said.

“We’ve got some real quality guys. We need them to play in the one side and it’s no coincidence that when we are getting these guys together, we’re winning more games than we lose and hopefully that trend continues.”
