Champion Carlton captain Chris Judd has tipped a stunning upset in the first round of the AFL season, declaring a revitalised Fremantle will defeat reigning premiers Geelong in Perth.

Dual-Brownlow medallist Judd’s adventurous pick was backed up by newly-appointed AFLPA president Luke Ball, who also tipped a Dockers upset at Patersons Stadium on Saturday-week.

Classy Collingwood midfielder Ball also believes pre-season competition winners Adelaide will continue on their winning run over the Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium in their Round 1 clash.

Greater Western Sydney boom recruit Israel Folau thinks his Giants have what it takes to defeat cross-town rivals Sydney in their stand-alone fixture this weekend.

Folau has tipped a thriller, declaring the Giants will pip the Swans by a goal in their ANZ Stadium blockbuster.

Ball and Judd, however, predict a bleak affair for the GWS’ debut performance, with Ball backing the Swans by a whopping 72 points and Judd tipping a 60-point win to Sydney.

Judd has backed his former side West Coast to overcome a pre-season riddled with injuries to key players and defeat the Western Bulldogs in Melbourne.

The Eagles have copped several blows in their lead-up to their 2012 campaign, losing crafty goal-kicker Mark LeCras to a season-ending knee injury and half-forward flanker Mark Nicoski to a severe hamstring tear.

Folau and Judd agree that North Melbourne will upset Essendon in their Round 1 fixture, but Ball has backed James Hird’s Bombers to come away with the points.
