The Fremantle Dockers are pleased to announce that Victoria Cross recipient Corporal Ben Roberts-Smith has accepted the position as the club’s new Number 1 Ticket Holder.

Cpl Roberts-Smith, who is a member of the elite Special Air Service Regiment, was awarded the Victoria Cross in 2011 for his actions on 11 June, 2010 during a battle in the village of Tizak, in Afghanistan’s Kandahar province.

He takes over as Number 1 Ticket Holder from Australian rock band Eskimo Joe.

A Fremantle supporter since the club’s inception in 1995, Cpl Roberts-Smith said being the Number 1 Ticket Holder was a great honour.

“I’m obviously very lucky and I feel very privileged to be asked to do that for the club,” he said.

“To be asked by any institution, particularly one that you’re already close to, to be a Number 1 Ticket Holder is a big deal, so I take it pretty seriously.

“I’ll get out there and support the club in every manner – not just on the field but with their off-field endeavours as well.”

Cpl Roberts-Smith enjoyed a tour of the club’s facilities on Monday, where assistant coaches Peter Sumich and Mark Stone ran him through some of the new football technology used in today’s game.

He also met his favourite Freo Docker of all time – Matthew Pavlich – and chatted in the gym with Aaron Sandilands, who was more than happy to take a short break from weights to meet Australia’s most decorated serving soldier.

Although Cpl Roberts-Smith will spend significant time overseas, he will be taking every opportunity when he is in Australia to support the club.

“I’ll be making every effort to watch the team play in person,” he said.

“This is another big year for me with work – I will be going away again to serve overseas. But with that in mind I will make as much time as possible to support the club.”

Cpl Roberts-Smith is confident that Fremantle will have a big season in 2012.

“They’re set up pretty well,” he said.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if we easily make the finals and hopefully from there they can go all the way.”
