Freo trio making progress

0

Fremantle captain Matthew Pavlich is confident key midfielders David Mundy, Nat Fyfe and Anthony Morabito will emerge from interrupted pre-seasons and take part in next month’s NAB Cup.

Mundy (ankle) and Fyfe (groin and shoulder) both had post-season surgery, while the club has taken a cautious approach with Morabito’s return from a full knee reconstruction.

Pavlich said all three had shown encouraging signs and should be fit to take part in pre-season games, with the club launching its NAB Cup campaign against West Coast and Essendon at Patersons Stadium on February 19.

“Fyfe and Mundy should be pretty close to joining in next week, some portion of training. That’s really pleasing,” Pavlich said on Thursday at the annual team photo shoot in Fremantle.

“Certainly Nat’s progressed really well over the last couple of weeks.

Burning questions for 2012: Fremantle

Can Sandilands play a full season?

Perhaps because of Aaron Sandilands’ freakish height, fans and experts alike seem to think he is injury prone, too big, and more susceptible to wear and tear than other players.

The reality – and bad news for opposition ruckmen – is that apart from an unlucky 2011, when a toe injury forced him to miss nine games, and 2007, when he missed seven weeks with a groin issue, big Sandy has only missed a handful of games. Out of a possible 198 games, the twenty-nine year old has played 169 — hardly the numbers of an injury-riddled crock.

Sandilands, Barlow flying

Fremantle has been boosted by news two of its most important players – Aaron Sandilands and Michael Barlow – are closing in on full fitness after injury struggles last year.

Ruckman Sandilands, who had a turf-toe injury last year that sidelined him for nine games, says he has returned to “100 per cent” health, while Barlow is finally free of the pain and soreness that has hindered his comeback from a broken leg.

Sandilands, probably Fremantle’s most important player, told the Herald Sun he had completely recovered from his rare toe complaint.

“The rest over the off-season did it the world of good and I’m back training 100 per cent and really happy with the way it feels,” he said.

“The fitness staff have varied my program a little bit.

“We didn’t end up going down [the surgery] path, we went down the rest path and let it heal naturally.

Ballantyne boost for midfield

0

Fremantle is planning to add speed to its midfield with the aid of livewire forward Hayden Ballantyne.

The club is trying to develop Ballantyne’s midfield game in the hope of turning him into a long-term onballer.

At Fremantle’s first training session for 2012 on Wednesday, Ballantyne spent time in the middle while simulating match conditions and is expected to further his development in next month’s NAB Cup.

“[Playing Ballantyne in the middle] will add a fair bit of pace to our midfield group,” Fremantle stoppages coach Mark Stone said.

“We do have a lot of big guys, so with [Stephen] Hill and him in there that might give us a bit of leg speed that we’re looking for.

“We’re trying to develop that side of his game.”

Stone said the squad had returned in good condition from its Christmas break.
