Fremantle has come from behind to steal a thrilling victory against the Brisbane Lions, winning by 2 points after putting its nose in front with two minutes remaining.
The Lions jumped out to an early lead with skipper Jon Brown booting two first quarter goals and first gamer Claye Beams impressing with a goal to his name with his first kick.
Fremantle big man Aaron Sandilands looked sluggish early after a limited pre-season but Nathan Fyfe was superb for the visitors with 29 touches. Greg broughton also found plenty of the ball (27 disposals) and Nick Lower was was good in his first game for the club
The Lions were hit by injury late in the game and Brown was forced to leave the ground with concussion in the third quarter and Brent Staker was also forced off the ground with an ankle injury.
In a see-sawing second half, Fremantle hit the lead in the third quarter after a nice running goal to Hayden Ballantyne but the Lions hit back due to excellent work from Daniel Rich, Mitch Clark and Todd Banfield.
The lead stretched to 17 points after Banfield’s second, but Freo kept coming, winning 13.16 (94) to 14.8 (92).
