Triple Claremont grand final coach Ashley Prescott is returning to Perth and it appears likely that he will join Fremantle as a natural replacement for assistant coach Dean Wallis who is moving back to Melbourne.

Prescott steered the Tigers to three premiership play-offs during four years at the club only to suffer the heartbreak of losses to Subiaco (2004 and 2007) and South Fremantle (2005).

A return to Fremantle, where the midfielder known as Smooth played 28 matches from 1999-2001, became increasingly likely when Prescott announced he intended to quit Essendon where he had been working as an assistant under Matthew Knights.

Prescott’s decision shocked Essendon because they had just offered him a two-year extension and were confident he would stay at Windy Hill after three seasons.

Increasing the likelihood of Prescott joining the Dockers is his strong relationship with the club’s powerful football manager Chris Bond.

The pair were teammates for five seasons at Richmond before spending a season together at Fremantle.
