Harvey hopes key players will sign

0

FREMANTLE coach Mark Harvey is hopeful his two-year contract extension will further unite the playing group and encourage the side’s key players, including captain Matthew Pavlich, to re-sign.

Harvey, who is now contracted until the end of the 2012 season, said Wednesday’s announcement was good for the club’s stability as it looked to build on an impressive 9-4 start to the season.

Pavlich is out of contract at the end of this season along with star defender Chris Tarrant and key midfielder David Mundy, but Harvey was confident his signature would encourage key members of the playing group to re-commit.

“Hopefully this can instill a united group and make sure that we stick together with what we’re doing and make sure we finish things at whatever stage that presents itself,” the coach said from Fremantle Oval on Wednesday.

“They’ve been through a lot in their careers, or at various stages of their careers.

Contract extension for Mark Harvey

0

The Fremantle Football Club has extended senior coach Mark Harvey’s contract through to the end of 2012.

Fremantle chief executive officer Steve Rosich said today that the contract extension was a positive reflection of Harvey’s continued development as a senior coach, which has seen him coach 64 AFL games to date.

Harvey’s initial three-year contract as Fremantle’s senior coach commenced in 2008 and followed his appointment as an assistant coach at the club in 2006, including seven games as a caretaker coach in late 2007 after the resignation of his predecessor Chris Connolly.

A full-time assistant coach at Essendon for the previous eight years, Harvey had and an outstanding playing career with the Bombers that included 206 games and three AFL premierships.

“In the pre-season, the club, Mark and his management (ESP’s Dan Richardson) agreed to a timetable and a process to explore a contract extension beyond Mark’s initial contract to the end of 2010,” Rosich said.

Welcome to life on Mean St in a tagging role, Adam McPhee

1

ADAM McPhee is a man of fashion, so it was no surprise he was spotted wandering down Chapel St yesterday afternoon.

But a few hours later, he found himself at a far less glamourous destination.

Welcome to a new life on Mean St.

McPhee, Fremantle’s big-name off-season recruit, has been re-cast as a stodgy tagger.

And his opponent was the mighty Chris Judd, the Carlton skipper in the midst of his best season with the club.

McPhee followed the great one everywhere, including the interchange bench, and it was an inspired move by Dockers coach Mark Harvey.

Judd had a more than respectable 30 disposals, but 10 of those were ineffective.

With McPhee niggling and harrassing all night long, and proving he has the engine to go with the best, Judd did not inflict his usual pain.

Most of Judd’s work came in close, firing handballs into space, and rarely hurt the Dockers on the burst.

Bradley reprimanded whilst Judd has no case to answer

Kepler Bradley, Fremantle, has been charged with a level one striking offence against Bret Thornton, Carlton, during the third quarter of the round 13 match between Fremantle and Carlton, played at Etihad Stadium on Saturday June 19, 2010.

In summary, his previous good record means he can accept a reprimand and 45 points towards his future record with an early plea.

The incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), low impact (one point) and body contact (two points). This is a total of four activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level One offence, drawing 80 demerit points and a reprimand. He has an existing five-year good record, which reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to a reprimand and 60 points towards his future record. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to a reprimand and 45 points towards his future record.

Contact between Carlton’s Chris Judd and Fremantle’s Matthew Pavlich from the third quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. Contact was below that required to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.

Fremantle has answered critics: Ibbotson

0

AFTER two consecutive losses Fremantle midfielder Garrick Ibbotson believes his younger teammates answered the critics in their nine-point win over Carlton at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night.

Losses to Adelaide and St Kilda had some pundits suggesting Fremantle’s season was on the slide, but Ibbotson said the strength of character of the young side shone through in the victory.

“We have young guys in our team and they are hungry to play well and they are always going to be,” Ibbotson said.

“They are always going to put their best foot forward every week so from inside the club we had no thoughts of them having a flat spot at all and this week has proven that.”

The win over the Blues now has Fremantle sitting in the top four with nine wins from 13 matches – their best start to the season since entering the competition back in 1995.

But Ibbotson – who celebrated his 50th game for Fremantle – said the challenge is still ahead of his teammates to capitalise on their sensational start to season 2010.

Another step forward: Harvey

0

FREMANTLE coach Mark Harvey says his young side took another giant step forward after recording a nine-point win over fellow finals contender Carlton at Etihad Stadium.

Consecutive losses to Adelaide and St Kilda had some questioning Freo’s ability to maintain their early-season form, but Harvey was delighted with the team’s greener players stepping up.

“We mixed up some of our younger players and gave them unfamiliar roles and they coped with it quite well,” he said after the match.

“Sometimes the opposition tends to focus on our older players but if you can move some of our younger players around in specific areas and they can understand what we are doing, they can jump up as well and I think they did that today.

“You look at periods of the game and starting to see our younger players take the game on when it’s pretty crucial.”
